How Big Is the iPhone Ultra? Folded vs Unfolded Size & Thickness

Updated September 5, 2026: A new hands-on look at an iPhone Ultra dummy gives us a better idea of how Apple's first foldable iPhone may actually feel when folded and unfolded.

Apple has not officially confirmed the final dimensions yet. The measurements below are based on current CAD data, dummy units and pre-release reports, so small differences are still possible.

How Big Is the iPhone Ultra? Folded vs Unfolded Size & Thickness

Quick Answer

The iPhone Ultra is expected to be much shorter and wider than a normal iPhone when folded, then open into a display closer to a small tablet.

One widely circulated CAD-based estimate puts the phone at roughly 120.6 × 83.8 × 9.6 mm when folded and 120.6 × 167.6 × 4.8 mm when unfolded. Other reports put the open thickness closer to 4.5 mm, so the final number is not confirmed.

The outer display is expected to measure about 5.5 inches, while the folding inner screen is expected to be around 7.8 inches.

In simple terms: the iPhone Ultra should feel short and wide when closed, very thin when open, and much larger once unfolded.

How Big Is the iPhone Ultra When Folded?

The most important thing about the iPhone Ultra's folded size is its shape.

It is not expected to look like a thick iPhone Pro Max. Instead, leaked CAD models point to a much shorter and wider body.

Model Height Width Thickness
iPhone Ultra — folded* ~120.6 mm ~83.8 mm ~9–9.6 mm
iPhone 17 Pro 150.0 mm 71.9 mm 8.75 mm
iPhone 17 Pro Max 163.4 mm 78.0 mm 8.75 mm

*iPhone Ultra dimensions remain unconfirmed.

Compared with an iPhone 17 Pro, the rumored iPhone Ultra would be about 29 mm shorter but 12 mm wider.

Compared with an iPhone 17 Pro Max, it would be more than 42 mm shorter but around 6 mm wider.

That should make the phone take up less vertical space in your hand or pocket, while the extra width will be more noticeable across your palm.

A simple way to picture it is a short, wide, book-style iPhone rather than a tall Pro Max that folds.

Can You Use the iPhone Ultra With One Hand?

The outer screen should be suitable for many one-handed tasks.

In a September 4 hands-on test of a case-maker dummy, AppleInsider found that the exterior display was small enough to reach all four corners with one hand.

That does not mean the iPhone Ultra will feel like an old iPhone mini. Its expected 5.5-inch outer display sits on a wider body, so the overall shape is different from a small conventional iPhone.

For messages, calls, notifications, music controls, maps and other quick tasks, you should not need to unfold the phone every time.

How Big Is the iPhone Ultra When Unfolded?

Open the phone and the experience changes completely.

The expected 7.8-inch inner display is much larger than any normal iPhone screen and only slightly smaller diagonally than the current 8.3-inch iPad mini display.

The aspect ratios are different, so the two screens will not have exactly the same shape or usable area. But the comparison gives a useful idea of the scale.

The latest dummy hands-on described the inner display as large and spacious, with enough room for split-screen apps.

That larger canvas could be especially useful for:

  • reading webpages and documents
  • viewing maps
  • watching video
  • editing photos
  • reading and replying to email
  • using two apps side by side

This is the main reason the unusual folded shape makes sense.

The phone stays relatively compact when closed, then uses both halves to create a much wider workspace when opened.

How Thin Is the iPhone Ultra?

The iPhone Ultra could be unusually thin when unfolded.

Current reports generally point to around 4.5–4.8 mm for each half when open. The latest physical dummy also felt roughly as thin as an iPhone Air when unfolded.

When you close the phone, however, the two halves stack together. That brings current estimates to roughly 9–9.6 mm before considering the rear camera lenses.

This distinction matters:

A 4.5–4.8 mm unfolded iPhone Ultra does not mean it will feel like a 4.5 mm phone in your pocket.

Its everyday pocket thickness will be closer to the folded measurement.

Does the Camera Bump Make the iPhone Ultra Thicker?

Yes, at the thickest point of the phone.

The latest dummy shows the two rear camera lenses protruding noticeably from the very thin body. However, the final lens depth is still unknown, and dummy units are not precise enough to confirm the production camera thickness.

For that reason, the reported folded thickness should be treated as an estimate of the main body, not necessarily the maximum thickness including the cameras.

Will an iPhone Ultra Case Make It Too Thick?

Case thickness matters more on a foldable phone than on a normal iPhone.

A regular iPhone case adds material around one body. An iPhone Ultra case has to protect two separate halves, and those layers stack together when the phone is closed.

This means a slim case should preserve more of the phone's original feel, while full hinge protection, thicker bumpers or a built-in stand will add more bulk.

If keeping the folded iPhone Ultra as thin as possible is your priority, a lighter case makes more sense. If hinge and drop protection matter more, some additional thickness is the trade-off.

Is the iPhone Ultra Too Big for Everyday Use?

The iPhone Ultra does not appear to be “too big” in the same way an iPhone Pro Max can feel too tall.

When closed, its shorter body should make the outer screen relatively easy to use with one hand. The main adjustment will likely be the extra width.

When opened, it becomes a two-handed device closer to a compact tablet. That larger screen is the reason to unfold it in the first place.

So the better question is not simply whether the iPhone Ultra is bigger.

It is whether you prefer a shorter and wider phone that can open into a much larger display.

FAQ

How big is the iPhone Ultra when folded?

One widely reported CAD-based estimate puts the folded iPhone Ultra at roughly 120.6 × 83.8 × 9.6 mm. The final production dimensions have not yet been confirmed by Apple.

How big is the iPhone Ultra screen?

The outer display is expected to be around 5.5 inches, while the folding inner display is expected to measure roughly 7.8 inches.

Is the iPhone Ultra bigger than an iPhone Pro Max?

Not in every direction. When folded, the iPhone Ultra is expected to be much shorter than a Pro Max but slightly wider and thicker. When opened, its inner display provides substantially more screen space.

Is the iPhone Ultra as big as an iPad mini?

The rumored 7.8-inch inner display is slightly smaller diagonally than the current 8.3-inch iPad mini display. The aspect ratios are different, so the overall screen shape and area will not be identical.

Can you use the iPhone Ultra with one hand?

The outer display should work well for many one-handed tasks. A recent physical dummy test found that all four corners of the exterior screen were relatively easy to reach with one hand.

How thick is the iPhone Ultra when closed?

Current estimates generally fall around 9–9.6 mm for the folded body. The camera lenses will make the thickest point of the phone larger.

How thin is the iPhone Ultra when unfolded?

Most current reports put the unfolded thickness at roughly 4.5–4.8 mm per half.

Will an iPhone Ultra case make it bulky?

It can. Because a foldable case covers both halves, added material stacks together when the phone closes. Slim cases should add less bulk, while hinge protection and built-in stands generally require more material.
