Which GM Vehicles Support Apple Wallet Car Keys? Cadillac, Chevrolet & GMC Rollout Explained

By Guichang Chen · ZEERA WIRELESS · October 20, 2026 · U.S./Canada rollout

Quick Answer

Apple Wallet car keys are coming to selected Cadillac, Chevrolet and GMC models and model years, rather than every vehicle from those brands. [1]
Cadillac EVs lead the phased rollout; additional SUVs and Cadillac models are scheduled for December 2026.
Confirm your exact vehicle and its activation notice before relying on the feature.
Setup requires a compatible device, the vehicle app, OnStar setup and your physical key fob. [2]
Digital keys unlock and start the vehicle. CarPlay puts supported iPhone apps on its display. Support for one does not establish support for the other. [5] [6]

Does Apple Wallet Car Key Support Mean GM Is Adding CarPlay?

No. A Wallet car key is a vehicle-access credential. CarPlay is an infotainment connection for supported navigation, calls, messages and music apps. They answer different compatibility questions. [5] [6]

When shopping, ask the dealer to demonstrate both functions separately on the exact vehicle. For dashboard pairing in a compatible car, use our wired and wireless CarPlay setup guide.

Which GM Models and Model Years Are Listed?

The following is GM’s announced eligibility schedule, checked on October 20, 2026. Model year is not the year you bought or registered the car. The December entries are planned availability, not confirmation that activation is live today. [1]

Cadillac OPTIQ 2026–2027 Sept.–Oct. 2026

How to read this list

A listed model year is your starting point. Ask OnStar or your dealer to check the VIN, required equipment and software status. For an unlisted vehicle or older model year, request explicit confirmation rather than assuming a future update will add support.

How Does the Phased Rollout Affect Owners?

GM says owners will be notified in the vehicle app’s “What’s New” section when digital key becomes available. A rollout window is not a universal activation deadline. [1]

Three checks before leaving the fob at home

Listed: your exact model and model year appear in the schedule.
Enabled: the vehicle app offers digital-key setup for your car.
Tested: you successfully lock, unlock and start it with the fob out of range.

Treat these as separate checks. A brochure, brand logo or ordinary Bluetooth pairing only answers part of the question.

Which iPhones and Apple Watches Can Use GM Digital Key?

GM’s implementation requires a supported ultra-wideband (UWB) device. Cadillac lists iPhone 11 and later generations, Apple Watch Series 6 and later, and Apple Watch Ultra models, while excluding SE, XR and “e” devices. Its current support page also explicitly names iPhone Air and iPhone Duo. Check the exact device, rather than relying on “newer iPhone” alone. [3]

Apple’s general Wallet list is broader than GM’s requirements

Apple’s general car-key guidance includes some older devices and iPhone SE models for compatible cars. That does not override GM’s UWB requirement. The automaker’s implementation determines which access methods work. [5]

Install the latest public iOS/watchOS version supported by your device. Cadillac’s setup pages still reference iOS 26; that wording should not be read as a reason to downgrade a phone running a newer public release.

A case or charger should be chosen for the phone itself. Neither creates vehicle eligibility or supplies missing UWB hardware.

How Do You Activate an Apple Wallet Key on an Eligible GM Vehicle?

Start in your brand’s vehicle app—myCadillac, myChevrolet or myGMC—when setup is offered for the eligible vehicle. Cadillac’s published instructions describe the following pairing sequence. [2]

  1. Prepare the account. Sign in to your Apple Account and the vehicle app for your car, and accept the required OnStar terms. Have a stable internet connection for setup.
  2. Prepare the car. Bring your compatible phone and physical key fob inside. Turn on Bluetooth. Switch the vehicle on, put it in Park and close the doors.
  3. Find the key option. Select “Add key to device Wallet.” If the tile is absent, look under Vehicle Settings → Keys → Add key; labels can vary.
  4. Complete pairing. Follow the prompts into Apple Wallet. Confirm that the vehicle key appears there.
  5. Test independently. With the physical fob out of range, verify lock, unlock and start. Keep a usable backup available during the test.

For a compatible Apple Watch, Apple says you may see an automatic addition or an option to add the key. You can also check the paired iPhone’s Watch app under Wallet & Apple Pay. [5]

Why Is “Add Key” Missing or Activation Failing?

No tile or unsupported region

First confirm vehicle eligibility and that the rollout has reached your car. Cadillac’s troubleshooting guide identifies unsupported-region errors outside the U.S. and Canada. Do not treat the North American schedule as a global launch. [4]

Pairing starts but does not finish

Update the vehicle app and device software; check internet access, Bluetooth, accepted OnStar terms and fob detection. Keep the vehicle on, parked and closed. Restart the phone, app and vehicle if needed, then contact OnStar with the exact error and VIN. [4]

Remote app unlock is not proof of Wallet support. Ask whether the demonstration adds a credential to Apple Wallet and allows the car to start. Likewise, a CarPlay issue should be diagnosed separately; our Chevrolet CarPlay troubleshooting guide addresses dashboard connections.

What Changes Once Your Digital Key Is Active?

Entry, start and nearby controls

Phone-based entry behavior depends on the vehicle and its settings: you may need to use the handle, and passive locking must be enabled where supported. Wallet controls such as climate or liftgate operation depend on equipment and proximity. Cadillac describes these controls as working within Bluetooth range, approximately 30 metres/100 feet—not from any distance. [3]

Keep charging separate from compatibility

Plan power for the phone and watch you intend to carry. Choose a mount that fits the actual vent or mounting surface; confirm case fit and charger power requirements before a trip. Our magnetic car-mount and charging guide covers those choices.

A charging accessory is an optional convenience. It cannot change the car’s digital-key rollout status or infotainment features.

For iPhone 18 Pro Max owners who also take photos at road-trip stops, the following is a separate camera accessory.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I retrofit an older GM vehicle with Apple Wallet car keys?

The announcement is not a retrofit promise. Ask the dealer to confirm an approved solution for your VIN before buying hardware or paying for a software service.

Do I need a paid OnStar subscription?

The setup guidance requires OnStar terms, an account and connectivity. Those requirements alone do not establish a universal paid-plan rule. Confirm the exact entitlement and any charges for your VIN with OnStar.

Can I share a key with another driver?

Where supported, use the sharing controls on the Wallet key and review the permissions offered. The recipient also needs a compatible device. Follow the actual vehicle/Wallet limits rather than assuming every sharing option applies to every car. [5]

Will the key work if my iPhone battery dies?

Do not assume so. Apple’s power-reserve support varies by device and car; confirm your vehicle’s behavior and keep an appropriate backup. A key card is an option only if your car is equipped for it. [5] [2]

Should I bring the physical fob for a service appointment?

Yes. Cadillac specifically instructs owners to bring the physical key fob for service visits. [2]
