Does Sound Glow Work on the Original HomePod mini? Compatibility & Software Requirements

Quick Answer

Yes—the original HomePod mini supports Sound Glow in HomePod software 27.2 RC.

HomePod mini 2 and HomePod (2nd generation) are also supported; the original full-size HomePod from 2018 is excluded.

As of October 20, 2026, this is release-candidate availability, not a confirmed public rollout.

Check the speaker’s software, then look for Sound Glow in its Home app settings.

Apple’s extra iPhone requirement applies specifically to voice control of Sound Glow.

Does the Original HomePod mini Get Sound Glow?

Yes. The important distinction is between the original HomePod mini and the original HomePod. The compact mini qualifies in the current RC; the first full-size model does not. 9to5Mac’s hands-on report identifies that difference.

For an owner who only wants the lighting effect, our advice is to check the update before replacing a working mini. For the wider hardware decision, see our HomePod mini 2 versus original mini guide.

Which HomePod Models Support Sound Glow?

Sound Glow compatibility at a glance

  • HomePod mini (original, 2020): supported in 27.2 RC.
  • HomePod mini 2: supported; Apple announced it with the feature.
  • HomePod (2nd generation, 2023): supported.
  • HomePod (1st generation, 2018): not supported.

RC model coverage: 9to5Mac. Apple also advertises Sound Glow on its second-generation HomePod page.

Do not treat a listing that says only “HomePod” as a model check. Verify the generation, especially when buying a used full-size speaker. Receiving an operating-system update and qualifying for each feature are separate questions.

What Software Does Sound Glow Require?

Check the speaker and the device that controls it

Speaker: the feature is present in HomePod software 27.2 RC. An older installed version does not establish readiness.

Home app: use a current iPhone or iPad software version. For reproducing the RC setup, update the controlling device to the corresponding 27.2 testing release as well. Treat that as practical RC setup guidance, not an Apple-published minimum-version guarantee.

Public release: once available, check Apple’s release notes and install the shipping update offered for your speaker.

Updating iOS on your iPhone does not itself install HomePod software. Apple provides a separate update path in the Home app. Check Home → More → Home Settings → Software Update for the installed speaker software and available updates. Keep the HomePod connected to power during installation. Apple’s HomePod update instructions explain the process.

Do You Need an Apple Intelligence iPhone for Sound Glow?

Apple specifies an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone running the latest software for voice control of Sound Glow. That is narrower than saying every way of using the lighting requires a newer iPhone. The condition appears in footnote 5 of Apple’s HomePod mini 2 announcement.

Keep these three capabilities separate

  • Lighting compatibility: concerns the HomePod model and its software.
  • Manual control: the RC exposes a Sound Glow switch in HomePod settings.
  • Voice control: Apple lists an additional compatible-iPhone requirement.

Our interpretation: do not use that voice-control footnote to declare an original mini incompatible with the lighting itself. Equally, do not assume a manual switch guarantees every Siri command on every iPhone.

Sound Glow support also does not establish Siri AI eligibility. Apple describes Siri AI for mini 2 as arriving through a future update, with its own conditions. Each capability needs its own compatibility check.

How to Turn On Sound Glow on an Original mini

  1. Check that the speaker has the required HomePod software.
  2. Open Home, press and hold the HomePod tile, and open its settings.
  3. Find Sound Glow and enable it.
  4. Play a song with artwork and look at the top surface.

These are the controls described in the current RC walkthrough; menu wording may change before release.

Apple describes colors derived from Now Playing artwork and movement that reacts to the audio. The effect is on the speaker’s top surface. Start with a familiar music track when checking the setting; a voice-assistant response is a poor substitute for that playback test.

HomePod 27.2 RC vs the Final Release: What Changes?

RC: a candidate for release

A release candidate is a late testing build. It lets testers check software that is close to shipping, but its availability does not mean the public update has launched.

Apple can revise a candidate before release. A feature appearing in an RC is useful evidence of implementation, while final availability should be checked against the shipping release.

Final: the shipping software offered to ordinary users

The public version is distributed through the normal update channel. It may use the same build as the RC or a newer one. The letters “RC” alone cannot tell you whether another download will be necessary.

For a household speaker you rely on daily, our recommendation is to wait for the shipping update if ambient lighting is the only reason to join testing.

Apple’s beta-program FAQ explains that prerelease software can contain errors and describes leaving testing to receive the next commercial update. Turning off beta updates is not an immediate downgrade. Do not reset your speaker simply because another person’s RC screenshot shows a switch you do not have.

Status checked October 20, 2026: the evidence reviewed establishes Sound Glow in 27.2 RC. This article does not claim that HomePod software 27.2 has been released publicly or give an unconfirmed final-release date.

Why Is Sound Glow Missing or Not Lighting Up?

Use the following as an editorial troubleshooting sequence. It helps distinguish compatibility, update-channel and playback questions; it is not a promise that every RC issue has a user fix.

No Sound Glow switch

Check the exact speaker generation and installed HomePod software first. If you stayed on public software, a screenshot from a prerelease build does not prove that your installation is broken. Also check that the controlling Home app is current.

The switch is present, but the effect is hard to see

Try a music track with visible artwork, confirm playback is reaching that speaker, and check the top surface in subdued lighting. This is a controlled comparison to try before changing other settings.

The app switch works, but Siri does not

Revisit Apple’s voice-control requirement. Manual control and voice control have different conditions; one result does not diagnose the other.

For third-party playback, check the actual app and route you use rather than assuming every service behaves identically. Our Spotify, AirPlay and Siri guide covers the separate service-integration questions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I replace my original mini just to get the lights?

Our advice is to wait for the shipping update and try the feature first. A replacement decision makes more sense after checking the functions your current speaker actually lacks.

Does Sound Glow make an old mini eligible for four-speaker surround?

No. Apple’s new surround setup lists mini 2 and second-generation full-size HomePods in matching pairs, with a fourth-generation Apple TV 4K. Lighting support does not change that hardware list. See our four-HomePod surround compatibility guide.

Is the existing Siri light proof that Sound Glow is enabled?

No. Check the named Sound Glow setting and test it during music playback. An existing status light alone does not establish that the new option is active.

Should I factory-reset a working HomePod to get the option?

Check the model, software and update channel first. A reset cannot turn excluded hardware into a supported model, and it is unnecessary just to check whether an update is offered.
