Apple’s iPhone 17 Air leaks: Titanium Frame and Latest Rumored Specs

In an unexpected twist, Apple is reportedly bringing aluminum frames back to the iPhone 17 Pro series—while keeping titanium exclusive to the ultra-slim iPhone 17 Air. According to GF Securities analyst Jeff Pu, Apple is shaking up its materials strategy in 2025, with only the iPhone 17 Air retaining a full titanium frame, while the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max move away from titanium.

Here’s everything we know so far—and why this decision might actually make a lot of sense.

Why Only iPhone 17 Air Gets a Titanium Frame

Rumors indicate the iPhone 17 Air will feature an ultra-slim body—possibly between 5.5 to 6 mm thick. At that level of thinness, aluminum simply doesn't offer the strength or rigidity needed to prevent bending or internal damage.

Titanium, however, is:

  • Stronger and more rigid than aluminum

  • More impact-resistant

  • Higher in tensile strength and creep resistance

  • More elastic and durable under stress

This makes it the ideal material for a thin yet structurally sound device. The iPhone 17 Air’s titanium frame is expected to support its sleek design while still offering daily durability.

iPhone 17 Pro: Aluminum Hybrid Design and New Camera Layout

According to analysts, the iPhone 17 Pro won't feature a fully aluminum body, but rather a hybrid design. The frame and body are likely machined as one piece, with a cutout on the back to insert a glass panel—primarily for wireless charging.

This design is more cost-effective than using full titanium and helps with antenna performance and charging efficiency.

On top of that, the iPhone 17 Pro is getting a new horizontal camera layout:

  • The triple-camera system is aligned on the left side

  • The flash and LiDAR sensor are placed on the right side

  • As a result, the Apple logo is shifted lower on the back

This repositioning may affect MagSafe alignment, meaning most existing MagSafe cases and accessories may not work properly. Accessory makers will likely need to redesign products to fit the new layout.

Final Thoughts

Apple’s decision to limit titanium to the iPhone 17 Air may seem surprising at first—but it fits with the design goals. The Air model is shaping up to be Apple’s slimmest and lightest iPhone ever, and titanium makes that possible without sacrificing durability.
