Should I buy the iPhone 18 Pro Max or wait for the iPhone 20 Pro Max? That question became much easier for me after Apple revealed the iPhone 18 Pro Max price.

The new Pro Max is fast, its variable-aperture camera is meaningful, and its battery life is excellent. If you need a phone now, it is one of the strongest upgrades available.

But I do not need a phone now. For anyone using a healthy iPhone 16 Pro Max or iPhone 17 Pro Max, the smarter comparison may not be iPhone 17 versus iPhone 18. It may be iPhone 18 Pro Max versus Apple’s 2027 20th-anniversary iPhone.

Reason 1: iPhone 18 Pro Max Storage Prices Changed the Upgrade Math

The headline says the iPhone 18 Pro Max is only $100 more expensive in the United States. That statement is technically true for the 256GB starting model, but it does not describe what many Pro buyers will actually pay.

Moving from 256GB to 512GB adds $200. Moving from 512GB to 1TB adds another $400. The 2TB model reaches $2,499—$1,200 above the base Pro Max.

That top tier is no longer a casual storage upgrade. It costs almost as much as buying a second flagship phone.

The gap matters because Pro users are exactly the customers most likely to need more storage. ProRes video, 4K 60fps Cinematic recording, large photo libraries, offline games and on-device AI assets can make 256GB feel restrictive over several years.

This price jump is not happening in isolation. Industry analysts have reported unusually strong pressure on DRAM and NAND flash prices in 2026 as AI infrastructure competes for memory production and supply. That helps explain the environment, but it does not make a $2,499 phone easier to justify.

Storage prices could remain high in 2027. Waiting does not guarantee a cheaper iPhone 20 Pro Max. My point is simpler: if I am going to pay this much, I would rather pay for a generation that may also change how the iPhone looks and feels.

Reason 2: Apple’s 20th Anniversary Is the Moment to Expect “One More Thing”

The original iPhone arrived in 2007. That makes 2027 the 20th anniversary of Apple’s most important product.

Apple does not redesign the iPhone simply because an anniversary appears on a calendar. Still, the 10th-anniversary iPhone X established a powerful precedent: Apple used that moment to remove the Home button, introduce Face ID and reset the design language for the next era.

That is why the rumored 2027 model—commonly called iPhone 20 Pro online—is more interesting to me than another annual specification upgrade. Apple has not confirmed that name, and it could choose a different one. Searchers may also see it described as the 20th-anniversary iPhone or 2027 iPhone Pro.

What I am waiting for is Apple’s next “one more thing” moment: an iPhone that immediately looks different before anyone reads the specification sheet.

Reason 3: The Technology for a True All-Screen iPhone Is Finally Becoming Visible

The iPhone 18 Pro Max takes an intermediate step. Apple moved the infrared flood illuminator below the display, allowing a smaller Dynamic Island, but the selfie camera and other Face ID components still need visible space.

The iPhone Duo shows a more aggressive solution. Its inner display hides a FaceTime camera beneath the panel when that camera is not in use. It is not the same hardware stack as Face ID on a Pro iPhone, but it proves that Apple is willing to ship under-display camera technology when the experience meets its standards.

Put those two developments together and the direction becomes easier to see:

• iPhone 18 Pro moves one Face ID component beneath the OLED panel.
• iPhone Duo places its inner FaceTime camera beneath the display.
• A future Pro iPhone could gradually hide the remaining sensors and front camera.

This does not prove that the 2027 iPhone will have zero cutouts. Under-display cameras still have to overcome light transmission, image softness, color consistency and repair complexity. Face ID also requires multiple components to work securely in different lighting conditions.

But Apple no longer appears to be waiting for the first piece of the technology. It is already deploying the pieces across two 2026 iPhones. A 20th-anniversary model is the obvious place to bring them together.

Reason 4: I Want the Curved, Premium Feel of the iPhone X to Return

The iPhone X felt special because its hardware and software appeared to be designed as one continuous object. The curved corners of the OLED display echoed the shape of the enclosure, while the polished metal frame felt more like jewelry than a conventional phone chassis.

Current reports around Apple’s 2027 design point toward more glass wrapping around the edges, extremely thin or visually absent bezels, and a softer profile than today’s flat-sided Pro models.

I do not expect Apple simply to copy the iPhone X. A modern version would need a new balance of glass, structural metal and internal reinforcement to survive drops, resist bending and maintain antenna performance.

That new material mix is exactly what could make the iPhone 20 Pro Max feel more premium. The best anniversary design would keep metal where strength is needed, use curved glass for visual continuity and avoid the sharp, slab-like feel of recent generations.

For me, that physical experience matters more than another incremental camera or processor gain. The iPhone 18 Pro Max improves the familiar formula. The 2027 iPhone could rewrite it.

What the iPhone 18 Pro Max Still Does Better Than a Rumor

A real product always beats a leaked promise in one important way: you can evaluate and buy it now.

The iPhone 18 Pro Max offers an A20 Pro chip built on a 2nm process, a variable-aperture main camera, improved thermal management, up to 45 hours of video playback, faster wired charging and storage up to 2TB. Those are substantial upgrades, especially for creators and buyers coming from an iPhone 14 Pro Max or older.

Waiting also has risks. Apple may delay some under-display components. The anniversary model may cost even more. A curved design could be harder to protect or repair. The name “iPhone 20 Pro” may never appear on an Apple box.

If your current phone has poor battery health, a damaged display, an unreliable modem or insufficient storage, buying the iPhone 18 Pro Max is reasonable. Do not spend a frustrating year with a failing device solely to chase an unconfirmed design.

Who Should Buy iPhone 18 Pro Max Now?

• You are upgrading from an iPhone 14 Pro Max or older.
• You need the variable-aperture camera or longer battery life immediately.
• Your current iPhone is damaged, unreliable or running out of storage.
• You prefer a proven flat-sided design over a possible first-generation redesign.
• A carrier trade-in meaningfully reduces the real purchase price.

Who Should Wait for the 2027 iPhone 20 Pro Max?

• Your iPhone 16 Pro Max or 17 Pro Max still works well.
• You want a true all-screen iPhone more than a smaller Dynamic Island.
• You care about a major industrial-design change, not only faster specifications.
• You need 512GB, 1TB or 2TB and dislike the current storage premiums.
