The new lineup starts at $399, offers ceramic as a third case material alongside aluminum and titanium, and carries a 24-hour battery rating. It also combines the S11 chip, a wide-angle display, 5G-capable cellular configurations and a broad health-and-sleep feature set.

When Is Apple Watch Series 12 Released?

Apple’s U.S. Store describes Apple Watch Series 12 as a preorder product that is available starting September 18. Shipping and pickup estimates can still change by configuration and local stock, so shoppers choosing a specific ceramic, titanium or band option should check the date shown at checkout.

Series 12 Sizes, Materials and Official Colors

Series 12 comes in 42mm and 46mm case sizes. Apple lists three case materials: aluminum, titanium and ceramic. The material range is broader than a typical two-material lineup, and it gives buyers a clearer reason to choose beyond a band finish.

Display: Always-On Retina, Wide-Angle OLED and 2,000 Nits

Apple lists an Always-On Retina display for Series 12 with a wide-angle OLED panel, LTPO3 technology and brightness of up to 2,000 nits. The wide-angle viewing focus is useful when glancing at the watch rather than turning your wrist toward your eyes.

The display is part of the reason 42mm versus 46mm is a personal-fit choice, not a simple “bigger is better” decision. The smaller size can be the better fit for a smaller wrist; the 46mm case offers the physically larger viewing surface.

Apple Watch Series 12 Battery Life and Fast Charging

Apple rates Series 12 for up to 24 hours of battery life, or up to 38 hours in Low Power Mode. Apple’s all-day testing includes time checks, notifications, app use, a 60-minute workout with Bluetooth music playback and six hours of sleep tracking over 24 hours. Cellular testing includes both cellular and iPhone-connected time.

Series 12 is fast-charge capable. Apple says it can reach 0–80% in about 30 minutes with the included Apple Watch Magnetic Fast Charger to USB-C Cable and a compatible Apple 20W USB-C Power Adapter. Apple also says 15 minutes of charging can provide up to 12 hours of battery life.

What Does the S11 Chip Add?

Apple Watch Series 12 uses the S11 chip. Apple lists the wrist flick gesture, single-tap and double-tap gestures, Siri AI and Precision Finding for iPhone with the Series 12 feature set.

These controls serve different everyday moments. Wrist flick can dismiss or manage a notification when your hands are occupied; tap gestures offer an alternative input method; Precision Finding helps locate a compatible iPhone. Precision Finding requires an iPhone and Apple Watch with a second-generation Ultra Wideband chip, and Ultra Wideband availability varies by region.

GPS vs GPS + Cellular: Does Series 12 Support 5G?

Yes. Apple lists Series 12 as 5G capable for cellular configurations. With a supported cellular plan, GPS + Cellular can send and receive messages, make calls, receive notifications and stream Apple Music or Apple Podcasts without the iPhone nearby.

The GPS model still has built-in GPS for route, distance and pace tracking. For connected features such as texts, calls and notifications, it needs a Bluetooth or Wi-Fi connection to the iPhone. GPS + Cellular adds flexibility, but it can also mean a monthly carrier charge and different service availability.

Apple identifies national U.S. carriers with 5G Apple Watch service, but plans vary. Confirm both carrier support and the monthly plan before choosing GPS + Cellular solely for 5G.

Health Features: What Series 12 Can Track and Notify You About

Apple lists Recovery HRV, high-frequency background heart-rate tracking, hypertension notifications, the ECG app, high and low heart-rate notifications, irregular-rhythm notifications, low-cardio-fitness notifications and the Blood Oxygen app for Series 12.

Apple also lists a Vitals app that can present heart rate, respiratory rate, wrist temperature, sleep duration and heart-rate variability. These readings can help reveal changes from a user’s typical range; they do not replace clinical assessment. Health features are not available in every region, and some require a particular software version or compatible paired iPhone.

Sleep, Temperature and Cycle Tracking

For sleep, Series 12 includes sleep tracking, sleep apnea notifications and Sleep Score. The Sleep Score can make the overnight data easier to interpret at a glance, while sleep tracking remains the broader record of sleep duration and patterns.

Apple also lists wrist-temperature sensing and Cycle Tracking, including improved period predictions, fertile-window estimates, retrospective ovulation estimates and perimenopause and menopause support. These features are intended for wellness and cycle awareness; they should not be relied on as a method of birth control or medical diagnosis.

Water Resistance, Workouts and Safety

Series 12 is rated water resistant to 50 meters under ISO standard 22810:2010. Apple says it can be used for shallow-water activities such as pool or ocean swimming and snorkeling to a depth of 6 meters. It should not be used for scuba diving, waterskiing or other high-velocity water sports.

Apple also lists a depth gauge to 6 meters and a water-temperature sensor. Water resistance is not permanent and may diminish over time, so a rating should not be treated as unlimited underwater protection.

For safety, Series 12 lists Emergency SOS, international emergency calling, Fall Detection and Crash Detection. Emergency features depend on a cellular connection or Wi-Fi calling with internet access from the watch or a nearby iPhone, as applicable; their availability and operation vary by region and network.

Apple Intelligence, Audio Intelligence and Siri AI

Apple lists Apple Intelligence, Audio Intelligence and Siri AI for Series 12. Apple’s Audio Intelligence feature set includes Live Rewind, Siri Recap, Sound Recognition and faster Shazam. Live Rewind and Siri Recap are scheduled to arrive in beta in late 2026, according to Apple, and require an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone 16 or later, excluding iPhone 16e.

Apple says those two beta features will start in English and will not initially be available in the EU. Certain Audio Intelligence features that use server-side models also have daily usage limits. That makes “available on Series 12” different from “available immediately for every buyer”: language, region, iPhone, service and rollout conditions all matter.

What iPhone Do You Need for Apple Watch Series 12?

Apple says Apple Watch Series 12 requires an iPhone 11 or later running iOS 27 or later. Apple Watch remains compatible only with iPhone, not Android phones.
