Updated August 17, 2026
Apple has not announced an M6 Mac mini or confirmed a release date. However, the latest reporting says Apple is testing a new Mac mini lineup with a base M6 chip and M5 Pro — potentially skipping the standard M5 entirely. Apple has also confirmed that Mac mini production will begin in Houston later in 2026, giving us another reason to watch for a Mac mini update before the end of the year.
If you have been waiting for an M5 Mac mini, the story has suddenly become much more complicated.
The current Mac mini has been using the M4 and M4 Pro since October 2024. Meanwhile, Apple has already moved other Macs to the M5 generation, including the MacBook Air with M5 and MacBook Pro with M5 Pro and M5 Max.
For months, the obvious expectation was simple: M4 Mac mini → M5 Mac mini.
But the latest report suggests Apple may have a different plan.

Is Apple Really Skipping the M5 Mac mini?
Possibly — but it is not confirmed yet.
According to reporting on Apple's latest Mac roadmap, Apple is currently testing new Mac mini models using M6 and M5 Pro chips.
That is important because earlier expectations pointed to an M5 and M5 Pro refresh. If the latest testing configuration becomes the final product lineup, the standard Mac mini could jump directly from M4 to M6, while the higher-end model moves from M4 Pro to M5 Pro.
In other words, the lineup could look like this:
| Mac mini | Current | Reported Testing |
|---|---|---|
| Base model | M4 | M6 |
| Higher-end model | M4 Pro | M5 Pro |
That does not mean Apple has officially canceled an M5 Mac mini. Testing hardware does not guarantee the final chip configuration, and Apple's plans can still change before launch.
But as of August 2026, the M6 + M5 Pro configuration is the newest major clue we have.

Why Were We Expecting an M5 Mac mini?
The expectation made sense.
Apple redesigned the Mac mini in October 2024 around the M4 and M4 Pro chips, shrinking the enclosure to just 5 by 5 inches while adding front USB-C ports and bringing Thunderbolt 5 to the M4 Pro model.
By early 2026, reports were pointing toward another Mac mini update using M5 and M5 Pro.
And Apple had already started rolling M5 across the Mac lineup.
The base M5 first reached the 14-inch MacBook Pro in 2025. Then in March 2026, Apple introduced the MacBook Air with M5 and MacBook Pro models with M5 Pro and M5 Max.
Yet the Mac mini stayed on M4.
That increasingly raised the question: where is the M5 Mac mini?

Why Would Apple Jump From M4 to M6?
There is no official explanation because Apple has not confirmed that it will skip M5.
One factor mentioned in the latest reporting is the ongoing state of memory-chip supplies. The timing and final configurations of upcoming Mac mini and Mac Studio models reportedly depend partly on component availability.
Apple also does not have to update every Mac with every generation of Apple silicon.
If the Mac mini refresh has been delayed long enough to overlap with Apple's M6 roadmap, moving the standard model directly to M6 could make more sense than releasing an M5 version shortly before the next chip generation.
For now, however, that remains an interpretation of the reported roadmap — not an announced Apple strategy.
Apple Just Added Another Mac mini Clue in Houston
There is now another reason to pay attention to the Mac mini later this year.
On August 13, Apple opened its new Advanced Manufacturing Center in Houston and confirmed that the same Houston facility will begin manufacturing Mac mini later in 2026.
Tim Cook specifically said Apple was pleased to begin Mac mini production later this year.
This will also mark the first time Apple brings Mac mini production to the United States.
But there is one big unanswered question:
Which Mac mini will Houston actually produce?
Apple did not identify the processor or generation.
The Houston line could initially produce the existing M4 Mac mini. It could also eventually manufacture whatever next-generation model Apple launches. There is currently no evidence that the Houston announcement itself confirms an M6 Mac mini.
Still, the timing is interesting: Apple is preparing a new Mac mini manufacturing operation at the same time reports say new Mac mini hardware is being tested.

When Could the M6 Mac mini Be Released?
Apple has not announced an M6 Mac mini release date.
The safest window to watch is currently late 2026 into 2027.
Apple's Houston announcement confirms only that Mac mini production there will start later this year. It does not say a new Mac mini will launch at the same time.
Meanwhile, reporting on Apple's Mac roadmap cautions that the timing of the new Mac mini — along with its final chip and memory configuration — may depend on memory-chip supplies.
That means three possibilities remain realistic:
- Late 2026: Apple introduces a new Mac mini before the end of the year.
- Early 2027: the refresh slips while Apple finalizes production and component supply.
- Houston starts with M4: U.S. production begins before the next-generation Mac mini launches.
For now, any exact month or event date would be speculation.

M6 Mac mini vs M4 Mac mini: What Do We Actually Know?
| Feature | M4 Mac mini | Next Mac mini |
|---|---|---|
| Status | Available now | Unannounced |
| Base chip | M4 | M6 reportedly in testing |
| Pro chip | M4 Pro | M5 Pro reportedly in testing |
| Design | 5 × 5-inch design | No major redesign confirmed |
| Release date | October 2024 announcement | Not announced |
The biggest mistake right now would be treating rumored M6 specifications as confirmed hardware.
We know Apple is testing the chip combination. We do not yet know the final performance, memory options, storage, ports, price or launch date.
Should You Buy an M4 Mac mini or Wait for M6?
If you need a desktop Mac now, there is little reason to avoid the M4 Mac mini purely because of an unannounced M6 model.
The current M4 generation already uses Apple's redesigned compact chassis and remains the current Mac mini sold by Apple.
Buy the M4 Mac mini now if:
- you need a desktop for work or school today;
- M4 performance already covers your workflow;
- you do not want to wait for an uncertain launch window.
Consider waiting if:
- your current Mac still works well;
- you normally keep a Mac for many years;
- you were already planning to buy a higher-end Mac mini;
- you want to see whether Apple really jumps to M6.
For buyers who have already waited specifically for an M5 Mac mini, waiting a little longer now makes more sense than it did earlier in the year. The next Mac mini may no longer be the upgrade everyone originally expected.
Upgrade Your Current M4 Mac mini Setup
If you decide not to wait, the current M4 Mac mini can also be turned into a more complete desktop workstation.
The ZEERA MacForge Gen3 Mac Mini Case surrounds the current Mac mini with a CNC aluminum, Mac Pro-inspired enclosure while adding improved airflow, easier top-access I/O and an optional SSD expansion module.
Compatibility note: compatibility with any future M6 Mac mini cannot be confirmed until Apple announces the final hardware dimensions and design.

So, Is the M5 Mac mini Really Dead?
Not officially.
Apple has never announced an M5 Mac mini, so technically there is nothing for Apple to cancel publicly.
What has changed is the rumor roadmap.
Earlier reports pointed toward M5 + M5 Pro. The newest reporting now points toward Apple testing M6 + M5 Pro.
At the same time, Apple has confirmed that Mac mini production will begin in Houston later in 2026.
Those two developments make the next few months much more interesting, but they still do not tell us exactly when a new Mac mini will arrive.
Bottom Line
If you have been waiting all year for an M5 Mac mini, you may end up waiting for something different.
The latest evidence suggests the base Mac mini could potentially skip M5 and move directly to M6, while an M5 Pro model remains in testing for higher-end buyers.
Apple's newly confirmed Houston production adds a fresh late-2026 clue, but it does not confirm which Mac mini generation will be manufactured there first.
For now, the M4 Mac mini remains the known option. The M6 Mac mini remains a rumor worth watching.
