Apple’s first foldable iPhone is finally official. Previously discussed online as the iPhone Fold or iPhone Ultra, the finished product is called the iPhone Duo.

It combines a compact 5.4-inch outer display with a 7.6-inch folding inner display. Apple has also added Split View multitasking, a titanium hinge, an A20 Pro chip, dual batteries and new camera modes built around the second screen.

However, the iPhone Duo is not simply an iPhone 18 Pro Max with a larger screen. Apple had to make important compromises to fit two displays, two batteries and a hinge inside a pocketable device.

Before you preorder the iPhone Duo, these are the 10 limitations and trade-offs that matter most.

iPhone Duo vs iPhone 18 Pro Max: The Biggest Differences

1. The $1,999 Price Does Not Buy Every Pro Feature

The first and most obvious iPhone Duo limitation is its price. The 256GB model starts at $1,999—$700 more than the starting price of the iPhone 18 Pro Max.

That premium pays for the folding hardware, titanium hinge, second display and new form factor. It does not give you the best specification in every category.

In fact, buyers give up several familiar Pro features despite paying more. The iPhone Duo does not have Face ID, a dedicated telephoto camera, variable aperture or an Action Button.

The iPhone Duo can still be worth $1,999 for the right buyer. But its value comes from being a new type of device—not from winning a specification comparison.

2. The Camera System Is Weaker Than iPhone 18 Pro

For many buyers, the biggest iPhone Duo drawback will be the camera system.

The Duo includes a 48MP Fusion Main camera and a 48MP Fusion Ultra Wide camera. It can also produce a 2x optical-quality view by cropping into the main sensor.

What it does not have is a dedicated telephoto camera. It also misses the variable-aperture main camera available on the iPhone 18 Pro lineup.

This matters when photographing concerts, wildlife, travel details, distant subjects and compressed portraits. Digital cropping cannot provide the same reach and flexibility as a dedicated Pro telephoto camera.

The iPhone 18 Pro models also offer more professional recording tools, including ProRes RAW, Genlock and external ProRes workflows.

The Duo fights back with features that use its second screen. Duo Preview lets the person being photographed see the composition, while the outer display can help with rear-camera selfies and group shots.

Those are useful new shooting experiences, but they do not replace the missing telephoto hardware.

3. iPhone Duo Has Touch ID Instead of Face ID

The iPhone Duo does not include Face ID. Apple has integrated Touch ID into the side button instead.

The decision makes sense from an engineering perspective. A foldable phone would need a secure authentication system that works consistently on both the outer and inner displays without adding bulky Face ID components to the thin body.

Side-button Touch ID can be fast when the phone is already in your hand. It also works whether the iPhone Duo is open or closed.

But it may feel less convenient when the phone is lying on a desk, attached to a MagSafe car mount or positioned away from your hand. Gloves, wet fingers and certain mounting positions can also make the sensor harder to reach.

Users who rely on Face ID for password autofill, Apple Pay and quick notification access should try the side-button position before preordering.

4. Battery Life Drops When You Use the Inner Display

The iPhone Duo has a dual-battery system, with battery capacity distributed across both sides of the device. Apple also uses the efficient A20 Pro chip, C2 modem and vapor-chamber cooling.

Even so, its battery life depends heavily on which screen you use.

This creates an unavoidable contradiction: the 7.6-inch inner display is the main reason to buy the iPhone Duo, but it is also the mode that consumes more power.

Streaming video, gaming, navigation, multitasking and high brightness can increase the difference further. Real-world testing will be required after the phone ships.

Apple says the iPhone Duo can reach approximately 50% charge in 20 minutes with a compatible 60W adapter. The iPhone 18 Pro Max reaches the same level faster under Apple’s stated test conditions.

5. It Is Heavier and Thicker Than It Looks

Apple promotes the iPhone Duo as its thinnest iPhone when opened. That is true, but it describes only one physical state.

When closed, the phone is 11.3mm thick. It also weighs 254 grams, making it slightly heavier than the 249-gram iPhone 18 Pro Max.

The 84.1mm closed width may also affect one-handed comfort. A device can be short enough to fit in a pocket while still feeling wide and substantial in the hand.

A protective iPhone Duo case adds more weight and thickness because it must cover two separate halves. A rugged case with hinge protection, a kickstand or a stylus holder may push the total closer to 300 grams.

This affects more than pocket comfort. The extra mass matters when watching videos in bed, reading one-handed or attaching the phone to a magnetic car mount on rough roads.

6. The Crease Is Less Visible, Not Physically Gone

The iPhone Duo may have one of the least visible creases on a foldable phone, but “nearly crease-free” does not mean there is no crease.

Apple uses a nano-texture finish to diffuse light and reduce reflections across the folding area. From a straight viewing angle, the center line can be extremely difficult to see.

7. The Inner Display Is More Vulnerable Than a Normal iPhone Screen

The iPhone Duo inner display is far more sophisticated than a conventional iPhone screen.

Apple describes a 10-layer folding structure with high-strength glass, flexible adhesives, a titanium support plate, a nano-textured polymer cover layer and a scratch-resistant coating.

That construction is designed to bend safely. It cannot behave exactly like the rigid outer glass on a traditional iPhone 18 Pro.

Small grains of sand, hard debris, fingernails and concentrated pressure may be more dangerous to a flexible inner display. Closing the phone with an object trapped between the two sides can also place pressure directly on the screen.

A separate protector for the rigid outer display is a safer and more conventional purchase. A case with raised edges can also help protect the exposed exterior screen when the phone is closed.

8. A Foldable iPhone Case Cannot Protect Everything Perfectly

Choosing the best iPhone Duo case involves compromises that do not exist on a normal iPhone.

A thin case keeps the device portable but may leave the hinge exposed. A rugged hinge-protection case offers more coverage but adds weight and can interfere with the phone’s flat, thin appearance.

Cases that cover part of the outer display may reduce usable screen space or interfere with edge gestures. This is especially important when using the outer screen as a preview for rear-camera selfies.

Built-in kickstands are useful for landscape video, but not every stand supports the unfolded phone securely in portrait orientation.

A folio cover can protect the screen but may block the outer display, rear-camera preview or magnetic accessories. Wallet attachments can also create an uneven surface when the phone is unfolded.

Before buying an iPhone Duo case, check five details:

• Does it protect the hinge or leave it exposed?
• Does the front frame interfere with outer-screen gestures?
• Can it stay flat when the phone is fully opened?
• Does its kickstand work in both portrait and landscape?
• Is its magnetic system strong enough for the phone’s weight?

9. Apps May Not Use the Large Screen Perfectly at Launch

Apple designed both screens with the same aspect ratio to make transitions more consistent. iOS 27 also introduces Split View and layouts created specifically for the iPhone Duo.

Apple’s own apps should provide the most polished experience. Third-party apps are less predictable.

Some apps may initially stretch a standard iPhone layout across the 7.6-inch screen. Others may show excessive empty space, awkward controls, unusual video cropping or interfaces that do not take advantage of the second panel.

Apps that have not been optimized may still work, but “working” is different from providing a tablet-quality layout.

The iPhone Duo should therefore be viewed as a large-screen iPhone first—not as a complete iPad mini replacement.

10. First-Generation Durability and Repair Costs Are Still Unknown

The iPhone Duo has an IP68 rating, a grade 5 titanium frame and a hinge made from more than 100 components. Apple has also reinforced the device with internal ribs, ceramic-fiber inserts and a titanium plate beneath the inner display.

Those are promising engineering choices. They do not yet provide long-term evidence.

The phone has not been in customers’ hands long enough to measure hinge looseness, inner-screen marks, battery aging, dust accumulation or damage after thousands of folds.

Repair cost is another major concern. A folding display, complex hinge and two-part chassis are likely to be more complicated to replace than a conventional iPhone screen.

This does not mean the iPhone Duo will be unreliable. It means durability should be treated as an unanswered buying question rather than an established strength or weakness.

Is iPhone Duo MagSafe and Charger Compatibility Different?

Charging accessories are generally easier to carry forward than phone-specific cases, but the iPhone Duo’s weight and folding shape introduce new considerations.

A MagSafe or Qi2 charger should provide a flat and stable contact surface. Thick hinge covers, kickstands, wallets and uneven case designs may prevent ideal magnetic alignment.

For a desk or nightstand, a foldable charging stand should support the device without placing unnecessary pressure on the hinge.

For driving, magnetic strength alone is not enough. A car charger also needs a stable vent mount, controlled viewing angle and enough support to prevent the heavy phone from rotating on rough roads.

Navigation, wireless CarPlay, direct sunlight and wireless charging can generate heat at the same time. An actively cooled charger may be more valuable in a car than simply choosing the highest advertised charging wattage.

Should You Preorder iPhone Duo or Buy iPhone 18 Pro Max?

Choose the iPhone Duo if you genuinely want a foldable phone, regularly watch video, read, multitask or want a larger display without carrying an iPad mini.

Choose the iPhone 18 Pro Max if camera zoom, professional video, Face ID, predictable durability and maximum large-screen battery life matter more.

Switching from an iPhone 17 Pro Max or iPhone 18 Pro Max to the iPhone Duo should not be viewed as a normal upgrade.

You are exchanging some traditional flagship strengths for an entirely new way of using an iPhone. In some areas, the Duo is more capable. In others, it is clearly a downgrade.

Final Verdict: Who Should Wait?

The iPhone Duo is one of Apple’s most interesting products in years, but excitement should not hide its trade-offs.

You should consider preordering if the foldable display directly improves how you work, travel, read or watch content—and you accept the higher price and first-generation uncertainty.

You should wait for full reviews if you are worried about inner-screen durability, real battery life, app scaling, wireless charging temperature, car-mount stability or repair costs.

For most buyers, waiting until the first durability tests and long-term reviews appear will provide more useful information than another short hands-on video.
