Google Maps Now Fills Both iPhone Duo Screens in Version 26.44.4

Quick Answer

Google Maps 26.44.4 fills both the inner and outer screens of the iPhone Duo. In its November 4 test, MacRumors found that the update reclaimed the space previously occupied by a black strip along the right edge in version 26.43.1.

The folded phone keeps a compact map, while the unfolded view puts search and tabs on the left and map controls on the right. Google’s App Store notes describe general bug fixes. The easiest way to see what the extra width gives you is to open the same route preview in both positions and compare the map around the route card.

What Google Maps changed on iPhone Duo

In 26.43.1, Google Maps left a vertical band of unused space beside the Duo’s circular status area. The 26.44.4 layout extends into that area on both displays. When the phone is open, the Explore, You and Contribute tabs sit together in a sidebar, leaving room for a wider map. See MacRumors’ test and screen example.

The Google Maps App Store version history lists 26.44.4 with the same general bug-fix wording used for 26.43.1. The two-display change was observed on the device.

Folded vs. unfolded on the same route

Open the Ferry Building to Pier 39 walking route on the iPhone Duo. Pick one route option and keep the same map layer. Take one screenshot while folded and one while unfolded, both before tapping Start. Keep the start and end pins visible in both views.

Outer screen · folded

Check whether the map now reaches the right edge and how much of the route remains visible around the directions card. This is the compact view for a quick check on the go.

Inner screen · unfolded

Look at the space to either side of the route and whether you can see more of the surrounding streets without panning. The wider display is best suited to getting your bearings before you leave.

Update Google Maps and check the layout

On the iPhone Duo, open the App Store, tap your account icon, and go to App Updates. Tap Update next to Google Maps if it appears. Reopen the app and check the right edge in the main map view with the phone folded and unfolded. Apple’s app update instructions.

Google Maps on CarPlay is a separate check

CarPlay displays Google Maps on the vehicle’s screen. The November 4 reports cover the handset’s folded and unfolded layouts, and Google’s release notes identify no CarPlay-specific fix. Google documents the car display separately in its Google Maps CarPlay guide.

How Street View uses the unfolded display

In AppleInsider’s test, Street View opened on the left with the map on the right. Folding the phone carried the Street View image over to the outer display, where a close button returned to the map. See AppleInsider’s screen comparison.

Do both iPhone Duo screens show Google Maps at once?
