QUICK ANSWER
Apple could launch an OLED iPad Air, an iPad Pro with vapor chamber cooling and an updated entry-level iPad in the first half of 2027, according to Mark Gurman.
If that lineup arrives, the Air could become more appealing to people who mainly want a better screen. The Pro would need to justify its premium through the complete display experience, performance under sustained load and capabilities that fit demanding work.
These are reported plans. The M5 Air and M6 Pro chip names suggested in MacRumors’ coverage are speculation, rather than Apple-confirmed specifications.
What is reported for the 2027 iPad lineup?
MacRumors’ November 1 report, citing Gurman’s Power On newsletter, puts three iPad families in the January–June 2027 window: Air with OLED, Pro with an expected vapor chamber, and a refreshed entry-level model. That is a launch window, rather than a scheduled release day.
The Air timing fits the broader transition discussed in our earlier Apple OLED roadmap. The new question is how Apple would separate two larger iPad families once both offer OLED.
Would OLED make the iPad Air as good as the Pro?
OLED could narrow one visible gap, but the panel label alone does not tell you how two screens compare. Refresh rate, brightness, reflections and panel construction all affect the experience.
Apple’s published specifications offer a useful baseline for the models sold today. These are current specifications, not a leaked 2027 comparison.
| Feature | iPad Air | iPad Pro |
|---|---|---|
| Panel | LED-backlit IPS Liquid Retina | Tandem OLED Ultra Retina XDR |
| Refresh | No ProMotion | Adaptive 10–120Hz ProMotion |
| Brightness | 500 nits (11-inch); 600 nits (13-inch) | 1,000 nits full screen; 1,600 nits peak HDR |
| Glass option | Standard glass | Nano-texture available on 1TB and 2TB models |

The practical difference
For a film viewer, better black levels could be the main reason to consider an OLED Air. For an illustrator or HDR editor, motion clarity and usable brightness may carry more weight. Gurman’s OLED report does not establish the Air’s future refresh rate, brightness or whether it will use the same panel design as the Pro.
Why vapor chamber cooling could matter more than a chip name
A quick benchmark measures a different experience from a long game or repeated video exports. When a demanding task keeps generating heat, the device’s ability to move that heat away can affect how much performance it maintains.
Apple already describes a vapor chamber moving heat from the chip into the aluminum body of the iPhone 17 Pro. That gives the iPad rumor a concrete precedent, although it does not establish the design or performance of a future tablet.
What would make the upgrade useful?
The meaningful result would be steadier frame rates, more consistent repeated exports or better completion times during a long workload. Opening a notes app a fraction faster would say little about the value of a thermal redesign.
When reviews arrive, look for repeated tests using the same app, settings and room conditions. A surface-temperature reading or one peak score cannot show the whole benefit. No specific improvement percentage follows from the rumor.
Our reading: if OLED becomes a mainstream iPad feature, the Pro’s performance argument becomes more demanding. It needs to deliver an advantage that remains visible during the work people actually do.
Where does the entry-level iPad fit?
The basic iPad could be the most consequential update for buyers who care more about total cost than display technology. For homework, video calls, streaming and occasional document editing, the relevant comparison includes storage and the cost of any keyboard or stylus.
Keep the earlier component rumors separate
MacRumors also lists previously rumored iPad 12 features: A19, Apple Intelligence support, an N1 chip with Wi-Fi 7 and a C1X modem for cellular versions. These are earlier reports, rather than a confirmed specification sheet accompanying the new timing claim.
An entry-level refresh should therefore be judged on what it delivers at its eventual price. Its appeal does not depend on matching every feature of the Air or Pro.
Should you wait for the 2027 iPads?
Use the rumored upgrades to identify what would change your purchase. A working tablet gives you the option to wait for actual specifications; an immediate school or work need puts more weight on products you can buy and use now.
Mostly reading, watching and taking notes
An OLED Air is worth watching if screen quality is the upgrade you want and your current tablet still works. Decide how much extra you would pay for the display before comparing processor names.
Long creative sessions or demanding games
Wait for sustained-performance testing if you are considering the Pro specifically for its rumored cooling. Check the apps, file transfers and peripherals your workflow needs as well. Today’s Pro has Thunderbolt / USB 4 up to 40Gb/s, while the Air supports USB 3 up to 10Gb/s—another existing distinction to check again at launch.
A family or student tablet on a budget
Compare the entry model’s complete setup cost with the Air. Paying for more graphics performance is hard to justify if your daily tasks never use it. For a smaller-format alternative, start with our iPad mini buying and setup hub.
The important shift would be a better screen becoming accessible below the Pro tier. For readers who need more, the premium would have to earn its place through the full display, connectivity and sustained-work experience.

FAQ
Does a vapor chamber require a fan?
No. A vapor chamber spreads heat through a sealed system and can work passively. Reporting that an iPad may gain one does not, by itself, imply that Apple is adding a fan.
Will existing iPad cases and keyboards fit the 2027 models?
Compatibility will depend on final dimensions, connectors and camera placement. Buy accessories against the exact announced model and its compatibility list; the Air or Pro name alone is insufficient.
