Quick Answer
Some Macs running macOS 27 show Apple Intelligence using 30GB or more; this is not a fixed requirement for every Mac.
Apple lists up to 14GB for eligible M3-or-newer Macs with at least 12GB of unified memory.
Turning off Siri or summaries stops those features, but does not guarantee the downloaded AI models disappear.
There is no Apple-documented “Delete All Models” button in the current macOS 27 controls; third-party removal tools offer a separate route.
Check your actual available storage first. For a main Mac mini M6, ZEERA recommends considering 512GB rather than relying on future AI cleanup.

Why is Apple Intelligence taking up so much Mac storage?
The models live on your SSD
Apple Intelligence includes on-device models, so its storage footprint is not just your Siri history or saved conversations. Apple's research explains that its advanced on-device model stores the full model in flash storage and loads selected portions into memory when needed.
Deleting a conversation therefore does not uninstall the underlying model. See Apple's foundation-model research.
14GB and 30GB describe different evidence
Official requirement: Apple lists up to 14GB for M3-or-newer Macs with at least 12GB unified memory, and up to 8GB for other eligible Macs.
User observation: a macOS 27 release-candidate screenshot displays 30.16GB under Apple Intelligence. It is one reported reading, not an M6 Mac mini measurement.
What remains unclear: the reviewed Apple documentation does not reconcile larger Storage readings with its stated requirements. A 30GB display alone cannot tell you exactly how much deletion will recover.
After reviewing Apple's documentation and current removal-tool instructions, ZEERA's assessment is that disabling features and reclaiming model storage are separate decisions. We have not independently tested model removal or measured the footprint on an M6 Mac mini.
How to check Apple Intelligence storage on your Mac
- Open Apple menu → System Settings → General → Storage.
- Let the categories finish calculating.
- On macOS 27, click the information button beside macOS and look for Apple Intelligence.
- Record the AI figure, total available storage and your macOS version before making changes.
The location is illustrated in the linked user storage screenshot. If your version shows a different layout, use the categories it provides.
A large System Data category can include many kinds of files. Do not label the entire category “Apple Intelligence” or assume the AI number should be added to every other category.
How to turn off Apple Intelligence features in macOS 27
Use these controls if you want fewer AI features. They are not a promise of recovered SSD space.
Disable Siri AI and unwanted summaries
- Siri: System Settings → Siri → Turn Off Siri; confirm. To retain the older assistant, turn Siri on again and choose Siri Classic.
- Messages: Messages → Settings → turn off Summarize Messages.
- Mail: Mail → Settings → Viewing → turn off Summarize Message Previews.
- Notifications: System Settings → Notifications → Summarize Notifications → turn it off.
These are Apple's documented feature controls.
Restrict writing and image capabilities
Open System Settings → Screen Time → Content & Privacy Restrictions → Siri. Block the capabilities you do not want, such as Writing Assistance or Image Creation. Available options vary. See Apple's Siri Restrictions guide.
Older guides may show a single Apple Intelligence switch. Follow instructions for the macOS version installed on your Mac; the macOS 27 workflow differs.
Can you delete Apple Intelligence models with RemoveMacAI?
Yes, a third-party tool offers model removal. RemoveMacAI's developer says it uses Apple's asset service and an approved configuration profile, leaving System Integrity Protection enabled. This is not an Apple-supported model-uninstall workflow.
Check compatibility, inspect, then remove
Back up first and read the current project instructions. At this review, it supports Apple silicon on macOS 27; macOS 26 and earlier are unsupported. On 27.0.1, the developer specifies version 0.2.3 or later.
If Homebrew is already installed:
brew install omlahore/tap/removemacai
removemacai status
Review the reported features and model sizes. To turn off Apple Intelligence and request removal, run:
removemacai
Review and approve the profile in System Settings. To undo the tool's changes:
removemacai revert
Removal affects AI features and apps using Apple's on-device models. The developer says disk cleanup follows macOS's schedule, so Storage may not drop immediately. Do not expect a guaranteed 30GB recovery.
On a managed work Mac, ask your administrator before installing a profile. Avoid manually deleting protected system folders or disabling SIP to follow an old cleanup guide.
How to free up Mac storage without removing AI models
Start with files you can identify
Use Storage recommendations, review Downloads and large unused apps, and remove old iPhone or iPad backups you no longer need. Empty the Trash only after confirming its contents.
Move large personal files to an external drive with a separate backup. Apple's Mac storage guide covers these options.
If your Mac is nearly full, this can create working space while you decide whether model removal is worthwhile. If available storage keeps falling after routine cleanup, record the changes and contact Apple Support with your macOS version and screenshots.
Can you move Apple Intelligence to an external SSD?
There is no Apple-documented setting in the reviewed guides for moving just the built-in AI models to an external SSD. Treat them as startup-disk assets when planning capacity.
Use an external SSD for documents, video projects and other libraries through the relevant app's supported workflow. Keep a backup and confirm the moved files open before removing the originals.
For drive selection and connection limits, read our Mac mini USB-C vs Thunderbolt SSD guide.
MacForge Gen3's optional SSD-storage version organizes a separate external enclosure; it does not add internal SSD capacity. MacFrost Pro serves a different purpose: cooling during sustained work.
Mac mini M6 256GB vs 512GB: does AI storage change the choice?
Apple offers the M6 Mac mini with 256GB and larger SSD configurations. A hypothetical 30GB footprint is about 11.7% of 256GB or 5.9% of 512GB, using advertised capacities. These are planning examples, not measured free-space figures.
256GB: workable for a controlled, light workload
Consider 256GB for browsing, office documents and a small app collection, especially if you already use external storage. Before buying, check your current used space and allow room for software growth and temporary working files.
512GB: ZEERA's preferred starting point for a main Mac
Choose 512GB if you keep local photo libraries, device backups, creative apps or development tools. The additional room reduces cleanup pressure. Do not choose a smaller SSD on the assumption that an unofficial AI-removal method will keep working indefinitely.
Our M6 Mac mini 256GB vs 512GB buying guide covers the broader decision. More SSD capacity does not itself make AI answers better; capacity and unified memory solve different constraints.
For context on the original reports, see ZEERA's Mac mini M6 Apple Intelligence storage warning. The 30GB report should not be generalized to every M6.
FAQ
Will deleting Siri history remove the AI models?
History and model files serve different purposes. Removing past interactions is not a model-uninstall procedure.
Does a 30GB storage figure mean Apple Intelligence uses 30GB of RAM?
No. Storage is SSD space. Unified memory is working memory; Apple's advanced model can keep its full weights in flash while loading selected parts into RAM.
Can I keep using browser-based AI after removing local models?
A website that runs AI on its own servers is separate from Apple's downloaded models. Apps that depend on Apple's local Foundation Models framework can lose that functionality.
Should I erase my Mac to fix this?
Erasing is not a reliable way to keep required assets from returning during setup. First inspect storage, clear identifiable files and decide which AI features you want.
