iPhone Duo eSIM Activation Problems: Transfer Errors, SOS and Fixes

Quick Answer

If your iPhone Duo eSIM is not activating, start with a working internet connection and check whether the line appears in Settings > Cellular.

Activation, phone-to-phone transfer and switching carriers can fail at different stages; use the matching fix below.

Moving apps and photos does not by itself prove your phone number has transferred.

Keep your old phone available, and do not delete an eSIM just to restart activation.

This guide applies established new-iPhone eSIM troubleshooting to Duo setup; the symptoms below are not a list of confirmed Duo-specific defects.

iPhone Duo eSIM Not Activating: What Should You Try First?

Use reliable Wi-Fi or a hotspot, install the latest compatible public iOS update, then try Airplane Mode, a line off/on toggle in Settings > Cellular, and a restart. Open Settings > General > About and accept an offered carrier settings update. [1]

Then identify the failure: is the plan missing, installed but activating, or active with a particular service not working? That distinction helps you choose the next step.

iPhone Duo eSIM Stuck on Activating: How Long Should You Wait?

Follow your carrier's activation estimate. There is no single waiting period that applies to every provider, account type and number transfer.

If the same status survives the basic checks, or your carrier's stated window has passed, ask whether activation is pending or has failed. If both phones have lost service, contact the carrier using Wi-Fi or another phone. The 24-hour iMessage verification window is a separate process. [8]

iPhone Duo Says “Unable to Activate eSIM” or “Cellular Plan Cannot Be Added”

Save the exact error before retrying. Check that the plan is active and that the carrier has assigned it to the correct device. Verizon explains that an eSIM profile is tied to a device ID and may need replacement after account changes. [11]

Ask support to check the Duo's IMEI/EID against the pending activation and confirm which profile should be installed. A failed activation message alone does not identify a faulty phone.

eSIM Transfer to iPhone Duo Failed From Your Old iPhone

For eSIM Quick Transfer, keep both iPhones nearby with Bluetooth on, sign in with your Apple Account on both, and unlock the old phone with its passcode. Apple's current setup instructions require iOS 18.4 or later on both devices.

On Duo, open Settings > Cellular > Add eSIM > Transfer From Nearby iPhone. Approve the request on the old phone and complete any carrier webpage shown. Quick Transfer requires carrier support. [2]

“Transfer From Nearby iPhone” Is Missing or Your Number Is Not Eligible

Carrier eSIM support and support for Apple's phone-to-phone transfer are different capabilities. If your number cannot transfer through the nearby-iPhone option, ask for Carrier Activation, a carrier app, a QR code or manual activation details instead. [15]

For a work or business number, ask the account administrator which transfer route is authorized. Avoid repeatedly restarting Quick Start while waiting for an account-level approval.

Your Physical SIM Will Not Convert to an iPhone Duo eSIM

A physical-SIM number can transfer as an eSIM when the carrier supports the process. You do not universally need to convert it on the old iPhone first. If direct conversion is unavailable, ask the provider to issue an eSIM for the existing number. [2]

Make clear that you want to keep your number. A new travel data plan or an additional line is a different purchase.

Your Apps Transferred to iPhone Duo, but the eSIM Is Missing

A restored Home Screen is not a service test. Cellular setup can be completed separately after the rest of the phone is configured. Return to Settings > Cellular > Set Up Cellular or Add eSIM and use the carrier-supported method. [15]

If the data migration itself is still stuck, use our Quick Start troubleshooting guide for iPhone Duo to separate that problem from cellular activation.

iPhone Duo eSIM QR Code Is Invalid, Already Used or No Longer Valid

First distinguish scanning from activation. If the camera cannot read the code, show it clearly on another display or use the carrier's manual setup details. If the code is recognized but rejected, ask the issuer to check its status and the assigned device.

Do not assume an old QR code can download a replacement profile. Verizon notes that account changes can generate a new eSIM profile; use the current activation supplied for your line. [11], [15]

The Add eSIM Option Is Missing on iPhone Duo

Look for Set Up Cellular as well as Add eSIM; the label can depend on whether a line is already configured. In some regions, the menu is called Mobile Data or Mobile Service. [15]

If neither option is available after updating and restarting, ask Apple to check the device configuration and ask your carrier to confirm eligibility for the exact model. For a managed phone, involve your IT administrator before changing management settings.

iPhone Duo Shows SOS, No Service or Searching After eSIM Transfer

These messages mean the phone is not connected to your normal cellular network; they do not, by themselves, tell you whether the eSIM download failed.

  • Check that the intended line is enabled and that you are in coverage.
  • Turn Airplane Mode on for at least 15 seconds, then turn it off.
  • Ask the carrier to check outages, account status, device blocks and the assigned plan.

If the carrier confirms its side is working and service still fails, Apple Support diagnostics can help with the next stage. [4]

Your Old iPhone Lost Service, but iPhone Duo Still Has No Signal

In a normal transfer, activation on the new iPhone deactivates the previous SIM. If neither phone can make a call, tell the carrier exactly when the old line stopped working and ask it to check which device currently holds the number. [2]

Use another phone or the carrier's official support channel over Wi-Fi. Keep the old device intact until the service problem is resolved.

eSIM Activation Asks for a Verification Code You Cannot Receive

If the carrier sends its sign-in code to a line that has already stopped working, use an alternative verification method offered in its official account flow. If none is available, ask support or an authorized store how to verify ownership.

Have the account holder or authorized administrator available. Do not confuse the carrier account PIN with your iPhone passcode or the number-transfer PIN used when changing providers.

iPhone Duo eSIM Is Active, but Cellular Data Does Not Work

Open Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data and select the intended plan. With two lines installed, the line used for calls may differ from the line chosen for data. Check the correct line before assuming activation failed. [6], [7]

Turn Wi-Fi off briefly and load a webpage. If calls work but that test fails, ask the carrier to check the data plan and any required settings. Use only the APN details supplied by your provider.

iPhone Duo Is Not Receiving SMS or Verification Codes After eSIM Transfer

Test an ordinary SMS from another phone separately from a banking or sign-in code. If ordinary SMS also fails, ask the carrier to check messaging service and whether a number transfer is complete. If ordinary SMS works, report the narrower problem to the affected service and carrier.

A working iMessage conversation over Wi-Fi does not establish that carrier SMS works. Test the actual service you need before trading in the old phone.

iMessage or FaceTime Says “Waiting for Activation” After eSIM Setup

Phone-number verification for iMessage and FaceTime is separate from eSIM activation. Apple says it can take up to 24 hours and requires SMS capability, including international SMS where needed.

Check Settings > Apps > Messages > Send & Receive for the number. Follow Apple's activation steps if it is missing; if verification is already spinning, repeatedly toggling iMessage is unnecessary. A temporary email-based conversation does not prove the number has registered. [8]

The Second eSIM on iPhone Duo Will Not Activate or Has No Service

Check both plans separately in Cellular settings and enable the intended line. Apple says using two carriers requires an unlocked iPhone; otherwise both plans must be with the same carrier. Each plan must also be eligible and ready to use. [6]

Label the lines clearly, then test calls and data on each. If the problem happens only while the other line is on a call, describe that condition to support rather than reporting that the second eSIM never activated.

A Travel eSIM Is Installed on iPhone Duo, but It Does Not Work Abroad

Select the travel plan for cellular data, enable that line, and check the provider's destination coverage and activation instructions. Turn on Data Roaming for the travel line if the provider requires it; keep your home line's roaming settings consistent with your own plan.

Some travel plans provide data without a regular phone number or SMS service. Check the purchased plan before treating missing calls or texts as an activation fault. [7]

Android-to-iPhone Duo eSIM Transfer Is Not Working

Direct Android transfer depends on the carrier, Android model and software. Apple's current requirements include a compatible Android phone running Android 16 or later and a supported iPhone running iOS 26 or later, with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth enabled.

If Transfer From Android is offered in cellular setup, follow its pairing prompts. If your combination is unsupported, request a carrier QR code or digital activation instead. Moving photos and apps does not replace this service transfer. [9]

Verizon, AT&T or T-Mobile eSIM Activation Is Not Completing

Use your own carrier's activation route; instructions for another network may not apply.

Verizon eSIM activation

Use the relevant My Verizon activation or device-change flow. Verizon separates standard monthly, prepaid and business instructions; choose the one for your account. [10]

AT&T eSIM activation

AT&T's online Manage my SIM flow can start a missing eSIM download or request a replacement. Check that the correct line and device are selected. [12]

T-Mobile eSIM transfer

Follow the exact error and current T-Mobile instructions. Its SIM Protection page says Apple eSIM transfers are not prevented by that feature, so do not treat turning off SIM Protection as a universal fix. [14]

Your Phone Number Transfer to iPhone Duo Is Pending

Switching providers is a number port, which adds a process beyond moving service between two phones on the same network. Check the receiving carrier's transfer status and verify the old account number, account-holder details and number-transfer PIN.

AT&T advises keeping the old service active until the transfer completes. If a temporary number works but your original number does not, ask the receiving carrier about the port status before replacing the eSIM. [13]

You Accidentally Deleted the iPhone Duo eSIM

Request a replacement from the carrier. Apple specifically advises against deleting an eSIM as a troubleshooting step unless the carrier directs it. Removing the profile also does not cancel the mobile subscription. [3]

For example, AT&T offers a replacement through its online Manage my SIM flow. Connect to Wi-Fi and follow the provider's recovery process rather than assuming the deleted profile will reappear from a backup. [12]

An Imported or Carrier-Locked iPhone Duo Rejects Your eSIM

Check Settings > General > About > Carrier Lock. The status No SIM restrictions indicates that the phone is unlocked. Only the carrier can remove a carrier lock. [5]

Unlocking and network eligibility are separate checks. Before buying an imported device, ask your local provider whether it can activate the exact regional model and plan. A different Apple Account region is not a substitute for carrier approval.

When Should You Contact Your Carrier or Apple About an iPhone Duo eSIM Problem?

Start with the carrier for an activation request, rejected profile, pending number port or account restriction. Give Apple the carrier's findings if the account and provisioning checks pass but the device still cannot connect.

Have this ready: the exact error, phone number, iOS version, activation method, and IMEI/EID from Settings > General > About. Tell support whether the old phone still works and which services fail on Duo. [1]

Before erasing the old phone, test an outgoing call, an incoming call, ordinary SMS and a webpage over cellular data. Also check any essential sign-in code you depend on.
