iPad mini 8 vs iPad mini 7: OLED, A20 Pro, Design and Hardware Compared

QUICK ANSWER

iPad mini 8 is the bigger hardware upgrade: OLED, A20 Pro, a thinner and lighter enclosure, landscape front camera and IP67 resistance.
iPad mini 7 remains useful for reading, notes and everyday apps, especially if you already own it or find it substantially cheaper.
Both support Apple Pencil Pro, and neither offers 120Hz ProMotion.
The new model starts at $699 in the US; its 512GB version also gets a stronger chip configuration.

iPad mini 8 vs iPad mini 7: what changes most?

The new iPad mini (A20 Pro), commonly called iPad mini 8, changes more than the processor. Its redesign targets the things you see and hold: display quality, weight, thickness and the position of the video-call camera. The older iPad mini (A17 Pro) is the 2024 seventh-generation model.

This comparison focuses on the final hardware rather than pre-launch predictions. For the launch details, see our iPad mini 8 announcement guide.

Display comparison: OLED improves the picture, but ProMotion is still missing

Panel and screen size

iPad mini 8
8.5-inch Super Retina XDR OLED.

iPad mini 7
8.3-inch Liquid Retina LCD.

OLED’s pixel-level lighting brings deeper blacks and stronger contrast, especially in dark video scenes.

Resolution and sharpness

iPad mini 8
2316 × 1512 at 326 ppi.

iPad mini 7
2266 × 1488 at 326 ppi.

More pixels cover the slightly larger screen; pixel density stays the same.

Brightness

iPad mini 8
600 nits full screen; up to 1,200 nits peak HDR; 1 nit minimum.

iPad mini 7
500 nits.

The full-screen increase is 20%. Peak HDR brightness is a different measurement, so the screen is not 2.4× brighter in every situation.

Display glass and refresh rate

iPad mini 8
Optional nano-texture on 256GB/512GB; no ProMotion.

iPad mini 7
No nano-texture option; no ProMotion.

Both retain P3 color, True Tone and an antireflective coating. Neither supplies the 120Hz upgrade some mini owners wanted.

For reading and photo viewing, the display change is more relevant than the small diagonal increase. For fast scrolling and handwriting, OLED alone does not deliver the motion fluidity of a higher refresh rate. Our Apple OLED roadmap guide provides background on the display transition.

Performance comparison: A20 Pro vs A17 Pro

CPU configuration

iPad mini 8
128GB/256GB: 5-core CPU.
512GB: 6-core CPU.

iPad mini 7
6-core CPU across all storage tiers.

A newer CPU with fewer cores is not automatically slower. Architecture and per-core performance matter alongside core count.

Graphics hardware

iPad mini 8
7-core GPU, hardware ray tracing and GPU Neural Accelerators.

iPad mini 7
5-core GPU with hardware ray tracing.

The extra GPU cores are part of the change; core count alone does not measure the performance gain.

Neural Engine

iPad mini 8
128GB/256GB: 16-core.
512GB: Dual 16-core.

iPad mini 7
16-core Neural Engine.

The top mini 8 adds AI hardware as well as storage. The dual configuration does not apply to the $699 model.

Apple’s performance claims

iPad mini 8
Up to 1.6× CPU and 2.7× GPU performance versus the A17 Pro generation.

iPad mini 7
The comparison baseline for Apple’s claims.

These are up-to figures from Apple’s tests, not a promise that every app or storage configuration improves by the same amount.

The A20 Pro upgrade is most relevant to graphics-heavy games, creative workloads and local AI. For books, web browsing and simple notes, buying extra processing headroom is less compelling if the A17 Pro already runs your apps well. Also, Apple Intelligence support is shared by both generations; it is not exclusive to the new mini.

Design comparison: thinner, lighter and slightly narrower

Dimensions

iPad mini 8
195.3 × 132.6 × 5.4mm.

iPad mini 7
195.4 × 134.8 × 6.3mm.

The new body is 0.9mm thinner and 2.2mm narrower; its height barely changes.

Weight

iPad mini 8
255g Wi-Fi / 263g Cellular.

iPad mini 7
293g Wi-Fi / 297g Cellular.

Compare like for like: the Wi-Fi model loses 38g, about 13%; Cellular loses 34g.

Bezels and finishes

iPad mini 8
Apple says bezels are 24% thinner.
Midnight or Starlight.

iPad mini 7
The previous bezel design.
Blue, Purple, Starlight or Space Gray.

You gain a larger display in a slimmer body, but fewer color choices.

Water and dust resistance

iPad mini 8
IP67: tested to 1 meter for 30 minutes.

iPad mini 7
No published IP rating.

This adds protection against everyday exposure; it does not make the new mini a swimming tablet.

These are changes you can notice without running a benchmark. A lighter, narrower tablet may be easier to hold for longer reading sessions. The redesigned dimensions also mean an old fitted case should not be assumed compatible.

Hardware comparison: cameras, audio, wireless and accessories

Front camera

iPad mini 8
Landscape 12MP Center Stage, ƒ/2.0.

iPad mini 7
12MP Center Stage, ƒ/2.4, on the portrait edge.

The new position places the camera more naturally for horizontal calls. The resolution remains 12MP.

Rear camera and flash

iPad mini 8
12MP Wide, ƒ/1.8, 4K up to 60 fps; Adaptive True Tone flash.

iPad mini 7
12MP Wide, ƒ/1.8, 4K up to 60 fps; True Tone flash.

The useful new feature is the adaptive flash for photos and document scans, rather than a megapixel increase.

Audio

iPad mini 8
Stereo Acoustic Display system.

iPad mini 7
Landscape stereo speakers.

Apple’s redesigned audio uses hidden tweeters and woofers coupled through the display. Both have dual microphones.

Wi-Fi and Bluetooth

iPad mini 8
N1 chip: Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6 and Thread.

iPad mini 7
Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3.

A compatible router and network are needed to benefit from newer Wi-Fi capabilities.

Cellular models

iPad mini 8
Apple C2 modem, sub-6GHz 5G and eSIM.

iPad mini 7
Sub-6GHz 5G and eSIM.

Both support mobile data; switching generations does not introduce cellular to the mini for the first time.

Pencil and unlocking

iPad mini 8
Apple Pencil Pro, Apple Pencil (USB-C), hover and top-button Touch ID.

iPad mini 7
The same Pencil support, hover and top-button Touch ID.

Existing supported Pencils remain useful. Neither model adds Face ID.

USB-C and external display

iPad mini 8
USB 3 up to 10Gb/s; one display up to 4K at 60Hz.

iPad mini 7
USB 3 up to 10Gb/s; one display up to 4K at 60Hz.

The new generation does not raise these published connection limits.

Battery and charging: faster top-ups, similar rated endurance

Battery capacity

iPad mini 8
18.9Wh.

iPad mini 7
19.3Wh.

The new battery is slightly smaller in energy capacity despite the faster chip and thinner body.

Rated battery life

iPad mini 8
Up to 10 hours on Wi-Fi or video; up to 9 hours browsing on cellular.

iPad mini 7
The same published 10-hour and 9-hour ratings.

The specification sheet does not establish longer battery life for the new mini.

Charging

iPad mini 8
Up to 50% in around 30 minutes with a compatible USB-C adapter rated 35W or higher.

iPad mini 7
USB-C charging; Apple’s A17 Pro specification gives no equivalent 30-minute figure.

The new fast-charge claim requires the appropriate adapter. The included US 20W adapter is below that stated requirement.

Price comparison: what are you paying extra for?

US starting price

iPad mini 8
128GB Wi-Fi: $699.
128GB Cellular: $849.

iPad mini 7
2024 launch prices: $499 Wi-Fi / $649 Cellular.

This is a launch-price comparison, not a claim about the older model’s current retail price.

Storage choices

iPad mini 8
128GB, 256GB or 512GB.
Standard-glass Wi-Fi: $699 / $799 / $999.

iPad mini 7
128GB, 256GB or 512GB.

The base capacity stays at 128GB. For the older mini, compare the actual seller’s price, warranty and battery condition.

Source: US Apple Store, 2024 launch pricing.

At a small price gap, the new display and lighter body make the mini 8 easier to justify. At a large discount, the mini 7 can be the better purchase for familiar everyday work. The comparison changes again if you need 512GB: on the new model, that capacity also buys the higher CPU and Neural Engine configuration.

Should you upgrade from iPad mini 7 to iPad mini 8?

Upgrade for the screen, portability or demanding apps

Choose mini 8 if you regularly watch video, value lower weight, want the landscape camera or need more graphics and AI headroom. Those are specific improvements you can put to use.

Keep mini 7 if your current experience is already good

For reading, browsing, notes and light productivity, keeping a working mini 7 saves the full upgrade cost. If 120Hz is the feature you are waiting for, this generation still leaves that requirement unmet.

FAQ

Will an iPad mini 7 case fit iPad mini 8?

Do not assume it will. The new body is narrower and thinner, and the camera and audio layout have changed. Use a case explicitly listed for iPad mini with A20 Pro.

When can you order iPad mini 8 in the US?

US pre-orders begin October 28, 2026, with availability from November 6. Dates and prices elsewhere depend on the local Apple Store.
