Quick Answer
If iPhone 18 Pro CarPlay connects but has no sound, check the car's audio source and mute setting first.
Music, calls and navigation may use separate volume settings: adjust the car's volume while the affected sound is active.
For silent directions, enable spoken guidance in Apple Maps, Google Maps or Waze.
For calls playing through the iPhone, select the vehicle in the call's Audio menu and check Call Audio Routing.
If audio stays silent, restart both systems, test a direct connection and rebuild the CarPlay pairing.

Which CarPlay Audio Is Missing?
A working CarPlay screen does not tell you which audio setting is wrong. Start by separating music playback, spoken navigation and phone calls.
Match the symptom to the first check
- Everything is silent: check the vehicle's mute control, selected media source and volume during music playback.
- Music works, but directions do not: check the map app's sound mode and the car's guidance volume.
- Music works, but calls are silent: check the active call's audio destination and call volume.
- Audio stops after Siri or a call: close that session, resume playback and reconnect if needed.
- Sound cuts out when CarPlay disconnects: investigate the connection as well as the audio settings.
ZEERA assessment: After reviewing Apple, Google and vehicle-manufacturer guidance, we recommend testing one sound category at a time. Separate audio controls can make an otherwise working connection seem broken. These are troubleshooting recommendations, not a ZEERA road test or confirmation of an iPhone 18 Pro hardware defect.

CarPlay Connected but No Music: Check the Car's Audio Source
Run a simple playback test
- Open Apple Music, Spotify or another supported audio app on the CarPlay display.
- Start a familiar downloaded track, if available. Confirm its playback timer advances.
- Use the vehicle's source or media controls to select the connected iPhone or CarPlay audio source. Names vary by stereo.
- Cancel mute and raise the vehicle's volume gradually while the track plays.
- Try a second audio app or track if only the first stays silent.
A downloaded track helps separate a streaming or cellular-data problem from a speaker-output problem. A moving timer is a useful clue, but it does not prove audio reached the speakers.
Next, switch to the car's radio. If that is also silent, check the vehicle's overall audio settings, balance and fader. A system-wide fault needs attention from the vehicle or stereo maker.
If the radio works and several CarPlay apps remain silent, continue with the volume and connection checks below. Avoid changing several settings at once; retest after each change.
How to Change CarPlay Music, Call and Navigation Volume Separately
Some vehicles store different levels for media, phone calls, guidance and voice assistance. Turning up a song can leave spoken directions at zero.
Adjust the sound while it is active
- Music: turn the vehicle's volume knob while a track is playing.
- Navigation: adjust it during a spoken instruction. While parked, repeat an instruction if your app offers that control.
- Calls: adjust it during an active test call.
- Siri: adjust it while Siri is responding, if your stereo supports a separate voice level.
Watch the car's volume display. A label such as Guidance, Voice or Phone can confirm which level you are changing. If the knob only changes media, check the stereo's sound menu and owner's manual.
For example, Volvo's CarPlay settings include separate voice-control, navigation and ringtone levels. Its sound-control guidance also describes adjusting a function's volume while it is active. Exact controls depend on your model and head unit.
Music Works but CarPlay Navigation Has No Sound
Check the navigation app before rebuilding the whole connection. A route can remain visible while spoken guidance is muted or limited to alerts.
Apple Maps: enable spoken directions
Start an actual route from your current location, then use the map's Audio Control button to enable full spoken guidance.
On the iPhone, open Settings > Apps > Maps > Spoken Directions and check Voice Volume. Choose a higher available level, then test the car's guidance volume during a prompt.
A route preview from another starting point may show steps without speaking. Apple's spoken-directions guide explains this distinction.
Podcasts masking instructions? Enable Directions Pause Spoken Audio if you want spoken-word media to pause during guidance. Directions on Radio applies to supported cars; it is not a universal CarPlay repair switch.
Google Maps: switch from Mute or Alerts to Sound
During navigation, open the sound control and select Sound. Alerts mode can announce warnings while omitting normal turn instructions.
On the iPhone, open your profile picture > Settings > Navigation and check guidance volume. Choose Louder if needed, then retest through CarPlay.
Google's voice-navigation troubleshooting also explains that chimes can indicate voice directions still need to download. Open Maps with internet access and allow that download to complete. Menu wording can vary by app version.
Waze: choose Sound on and check guidance volume
Use Waze's sound icon on the CarPlay screen and choose Sound on, rather than Alerts only or Sound off.
For volume preferences, Waze's CarPlay sound instructions say to disconnect from the car, adjust the sound settings on the phone, then reconnect. Check Voice and sound and its guidance-volume control.
Useful comparison: try a second map app. If Apple Maps speaks but Google Maps does not, focus on the affected app. If all map apps and Siri are silent while music works, check the vehicle's voice settings and firmware next.
Bluetooth-only navigation instructions are a different setup. Keep Bluetooth and Wi-Fi enabled for wireless CarPlay; turning either off as a generic audio fix can interrupt the CarPlay connection.
CarPlay Calls Have No Sound or Play Through the iPhone
Call audio has both an output destination and a volume level. Check them during a test call while parked.
Select the vehicle for the active call
- Place or answer a test call using CarPlay.
- On the iPhone's call screen, tap Audio and select the vehicle or CarPlay destination shown. Labels vary.
- Raise the car's volume gradually while the call is active.
- If the vehicle is missing from the output list, reconnect CarPlay and try again.
If audio is going to AirPods or another headset, disconnect that accessory for this test and select the car again.
Check the iPhone's default call routing
Open Settings > Accessibility > Touch > Call Audio Routing. Use Automatic as your starting point if you previously forced calls to Speaker or a headset.
Apple documents this menu in its call-routing guide. Automatic does not guarantee that every vehicle or adapter will route correctly; verify the destination during the call.
Can hear the caller, but they cannot hear you? That is a microphone or uplink issue. Check that the call is not muted. Compare a normal phone call with any affected third-party calling app, then check the vehicle's hands-free microphone if the problem occurs across calls.
CarPlay Audio Stops After a Phone Call or Siri
Restore playback before changing the pairing
- Confirm the call has ended and dismiss the Siri session.
- Open the media app on CarPlay and tap Play.
- Check whether the stereo still shows a Phone or Voice audio state.
- Reselect the CarPlay media source using the vehicle's controls.
- If music stays silent or unusually quiet, disconnect and reconnect CarPlay.
Briefly lowering music during speech can be normal. Music that stays quiet after speech ends warrants retesting the session and connection.
Note the trigger if it repeats: incoming call, outgoing call, Siri response or one navigation app. A repeatable sequence gives the stereo maker or app developer more useful information than “CarPlay has no sound.”
Still No Sound? Test the Connection and Update the Stereo
Move to these steps after checking the source, app sound modes and active audio destination. Apple's CarPlay support guide recommends connection checks, restarting, pairing again and current vehicle firmware.
Work through this order
- Restart: restart the iPhone and car. Follow the manufacturer's procedure if the infotainment system needs a separate reboot.
- Update: install the latest public iOS and affected app updates available to you. Check the stereo maker for firmware updates.
- Wired: use a direct USB data cable and the designated CarPlay port. Try another suitable cable or supported port.
- Wireless: check Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and Auto-Join for the CarPlay network.
- Adapter: remove a third-party wireless adapter and compare with the car's native wired connection, if supported.
- Pair again: go to Settings > General > CarPlay > your car > Forget This Car. Remove the matching phone entry from the vehicle and repeat setup.
If the phone only charges and the dashboard never opens, use our USB-C cable and CarPlay port troubleshooting guide. If the interface crashes or disconnects with the sound, see CarPlay not working or crashing: nine checks.
A symptom starting after an update is useful evidence to record, but it does not identify the cause by itself. Check the exact iOS version, app version and vehicle firmware before assuming the phone needs replacement.
Does a MagSafe Car Charger Fix CarPlay Audio?
No. A MagSafe charger supplies power; it does not select the speaker output, unmute navigation or repair a call-audio route.
For a separate charging need during wireless CarPlay, ZEERA SuVolt Gen5 offers magnetic mounting, active cooling and a Qi2.2 version rated up to 25W for compatible phones. Choose the correct version, power supply and mounting option for your vehicle. Actual charging power varies.
For charging at your destination, MagTri Gen2 provides a folding station for iPhone, Apple Watch and AirPods.
When Should You Contact Apple or the Vehicle Manufacturer?
- Radio and CarPlay are both silent: contact the vehicle or stereo maker about its audio system.
- Multiple iPhones fail in the same car: ask about infotainment firmware and the affected voice or media channel.
- Your iPhone fails across compatible vehicles: contact Apple with your software version and comparison results.
- Only one app is affected: report the problem to that app's developer.
- Only an adapter connection fails: contact the adapter maker with its model and firmware version.
Record the vehicle year and trim, stereo model, connection method, affected sound category and what happened during a direct-connection test.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to reset all iPhone settings to fix CarPlay sound?
No. Start with the affected audio channel, app settings and CarPlay pairing. Broad resets remove preferences and are not the first troubleshooting step.
Why do I hear navigation alerts but no turn directions?
Your app may be in an alerts-only mode. Enable full guidance, then retest its volume through the car.
Why does the iPhone volume button not make CarPlay louder?
Connected playback may be controlled by the vehicle. Use its controls while the affected audio is active, and check the stereo's separate sound settings.
Should I turn off Bluetooth to fix wireless CarPlay calls?
Keep Bluetooth and Wi-Fi enabled for wireless CarPlay. Instead, disconnect a competing headset and check the call's Audio destination.
Does Driving Focus explain missing music and directions?
Driving Focus manages interruptions. When music and guidance are missing, check audio-source, volume and navigation sound settings first.
Does this guide also apply to iPhone 18 Pro Max?
Yes. Use the same audio checks, while following the instructions for your particular vehicle and connection method.
