iPhone Duo is expected to ship with 12GB of RAM, but Apple has not publicly listed its RAM capacity.
A leaker says Apple once considered 16GB; that early plan is unconfirmed.
Apple has announced two-app Split View and Siri AI for Duo, so 12GB is not evidence those features are missing.
The open question is how often apps reload during heavy use and over several years.
If long-term multitasking is your main reason to buy, wait for retail-unit tests after October 23.
Is iPhone Duo's 12GB RAM confirmed?
Not yet. MacRumors reported on October 6 that the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max have 12GB of RAM according to Xcode 27 data. That data did not include iPhone Duo. For Duo, 12GB remains a well-supported expectation from analyst and supply-chain reports, rather than the same kind of verification.
Confirmed: Apple has announced Duo's A20 Pro, 7.6-inch inner display, two-app Split View and Apple Intelligence with Siri AI.
Expected: 12GB of RAM in the shipping Duo, based on several outside reports.
Single-source claim: Apple had previously planned a 16GB version, according to leaker Instant Digital. Apple has not confirmed that development history or explained any change.
Reports have linked the apparent change to memory supply and cost pressures, but the leaker's short post did not say when Apple considered 16GB. It would be premature to describe this as a confirmed last-minute cut or to calculate a performance loss from a product Apple never sold.
Would 12GB limit two apps in Split View?
Apple explicitly designed Duo to show two iPhone apps side by side. Its launch announcement describes Split View, the A20 Pro and thermal management for multitasking. The developer guidance also explains how apps adapt to the foldable display. That is stronger evidence for the advertised two-app workflow than an unverified RAM figure is against it.
The harder question is app retention. You may keep a browser and Notes visible, then switch among Camera, a large game, Maps and an AI editing app. iOS can reclaim memory as workloads change, so one or more background apps may reload when reopened. A reload can interrupt an unsaved task, but it does not by itself mean Split View has stopped working.
Likely comfortable: two ordinary productivity apps, browsing, messaging and switching between a few common tasks.
Needs testing: large games or editing projects alongside many recently used apps, especially while AI features and camera processing are active.
ZEERA's assessment of Apple's published workflow and the current reporting is that 12GB alone is not a reason to assume Duo will struggle with two visible apps. We have not tested a retail Duo; the frequency of app reloads remains unknown.
Would 16GB have made a difference?
Sixteen gigabytes is one-third more capacity than 12GB. More memory can give the system room to keep additional app state and large working sets available, but it does not promise a one-third speed increase. Performance also depends on iOS memory management, app behavior, processing demand and heat.
The difference may be hardest to see in a simple two-app demo and easiest to notice when you return to an app after using several demanding ones. That is why a quick benchmark score is less useful here than a repeatable app-reload test.
If you are comparing Duo with the conventional Pro phone for work, see ZEERA's iPhone Duo vs iPhone 18 Pro Max buying comparison. Screen layout, cameras, battery and handling may matter more than an unconfirmed memory difference.
Is 12GB enough for Apple Intelligence and Siri AI?
Apple advertises Apple Intelligence and Siri AI on iPhone Duo. It says AI work can run on device and, for some requests, use Private Cloud Compute. That confirms feature support; it does not reveal how much RAM each feature uses or guarantee that future models will have the same requirements.
A bigger AI model or an AI task running alongside large apps could increase memory pressure. There is no published Duo-specific evidence showing that 12GB disables current Siri AI features or that 16GB would unlock an exclusive feature. Claims about future AI support should wait for software releases and real tests.
Should you preorder or wait for real multitasking tests?
If you want the announced large display, two-app layout and current Siri AI features, the 12GB expectation alone is not a clear reason to cancel a preorder. If your purchase depends on dozens of apps staying in memory or on several years of increasingly demanding local AI, it is reasonable to wait for reviewers to test the shipping device.
On a retail Duo, open two apps in Split View, switch to Camera, Maps, a demanding game and an AI task, then return to each app. Note whether it resumes, reloads or loses an unsaved draft. Repeat after the phone cools and after normal background use; the first setup day can skew impressions. This is a proposed buyer test, not a ZEERA test result.
Preorders start October 16, with availability beginning October 23. The ZEERA preorder guide covers timing and delivery if you choose to order before independent tests arrive.
FAQ
Does Apple list the iPhone Duo RAM on its specs page?
No. Apple's public technical specifications describe the chip and features but do not state a RAM number. The 12GB figure is still an outside report for Duo.
Can I choose a 16GB iPhone Duo at checkout?
No 16GB RAM option has been announced. The rumor concerns an alleged earlier plan, not a retail upgrade or storage tier.
Will 512GB storage improve Split View compared with 256GB?
Extra storage gives you room for more files and apps; it is not an advertised RAM upgrade. Do not choose a larger storage tier solely to prevent app reloads.
When can we know whether 12GB is enough long term?
Launch-week tests can show present-day app retention. Longer-term confidence will require later iOS and Siri AI updates on retail hardware, so no one can verify several years of behavior before release.
