Quick Answer
If your iPhone Duo needs replacing but your Apple Store has no replacement unit, ask AppleCare to confirm the approved claim, check service inventory at nearby stores, and give you a documented replacement plan.
Some owners have had to wait for a matching Duo to arrive from another location. Retail shelves showing “sold out” do not always mean service stock is unavailable.
Ask whether you can keep using your current phone safely until the replacement arrives, whether mail-in or Express Replacement is eligible, and whether a temporary loaner iPhone is available.
Before handing over your Duo, protect your backup, Apple Account access and eSIM phone number. A confirmed free defect replacement does not automatically include AppleCare+ Express Replacement benefits.
Apple Store Has No iPhone Duo Replacement: What Happens Next?
Apple confirmed on October 26, 2026 that a small number of iPhone Duo units have an inner-display issue and directed affected owners to AppleCare. MacRumors reported that limited replacement inventory was already making some owners wait.
One Duo owner's account describes a store arranging a matching unit from another state. That is an example of a possible outcome, not a guaranteed transfer service or delivery timetable. Apple may use service inventory that is separate from phones offered for sale.
What Should You Ask AppleCare Before Leaving the Store?
Have your serial number, the store's assessment and your support case number ready. The most useful questions are about the specific replacement order, not whether the retail website shows stock.
1. Is my no-charge replacement approved?
Ask the advisor to record that the inner-display issue is being handled as a covered fault, not an accidental-damage estimate. Request the service case or repair ID.
2. Can you order my exact configuration?
Ask about service inventory for your color and storage, nearby Apple Stores, and whether a matching unit can be shipped to a local location. Request a realistic update date, not an assumed delivery promise.
3. Can I keep my Duo until it arrives?
Ask if the damaged phone can remain with you while the replacement is arranged. If the display, hinge or battery is unsafe, do not continue using it just to avoid downtime.
4. Is advance delivery available?
Ask whether your particular claim qualifies for Express Replacement and what hold, service fee or return conditions apply. If not, ask about standard mail-in service and the period without your phone.
5. Can I borrow a phone and keep my number?
Ask whether this location has a loaner program and how eSIM activation, Apple Account access and data restoration would work on that temporary device.
If Apple offers a refund instead of a replacement, ask how that affects your existing approved service claim and whether a replacement can be ordered through a different service location. Do not agree to return a working-enough phone or erase it until you understand the proposed handover and how you will stay connected.
Mail-In Service or Express Replacement: Which Is Available?
Apple lists different service routes. Standard mail-in service begins with sending your phone to Apple, so it can leave you without your Duo while it is being serviced. By contrast, Express Replacement Service can send an eligible replacement before the original is returned.
In-store replacement
Apple assesses your Duo and, if a matching service unit is available, may arrange the exchange through the store. Availability is not guaranteed by retail stock listings.
Mail-in service
Apple supplies shipping materials and processes the phone after it is sent in. Ask when you must surrender the phone and whether an alternative contact method is required.
Express Replacement
For eligible AppleCare plans and supported regions, Apple ships a replacement first. Expect a temporary card hold and a 10-business-day original-device return window.
For eligible Express Replacement claims, Apple places a temporary card authorization and asks you to return the original within 10 business days. Apple says the hold is released after the returned phone passes its coverage assessment; late return or ineligible damage may result in a charge. Confirm terms for your country and claim before proceeding.
Will Apple Give You a Loaner iPhone While You Wait?
You can ask, but a loaner is not guaranteed. Apple publishes iPhone loan agreements for circumstances in which a service location provides a temporary phone. Availability depends on the local service arrangement; it should not be treated as an automatic entitlement whenever a Duo is out of stock.
If a loaner is offered, ask whether it supports your carrier's eSIM, how long you may keep it, whether a payment authorization is required, and how your data must be erased when you return it. A loaner does not need to be another iPhone Duo.
How Do You Protect Your Data Before the Replacement?
Keep a verified backup before any handover. If the cracked Duo's outer display still works, you may be able to complete a backup without opening the damaged inner screen. If neither display responds, tell AppleCare which backup and account-access steps you cannot complete.
If the Duo is still usable
On Wi-Fi, open Settings > [your name] > iCloud > iCloud Backup > Back Up Now. Check the completed backup time. A password-protected encrypted Mac/PC backup can also preserve saved passwords and Health data.
If the inner screen is unusable
Use the outer display if it responds. If the entire phone cannot unlock, do not erase it hoping that data can be recovered; ask Apple to explain available service steps and check the latest existing iCloud or computer backup.
Before sign-in and handover
Make sure you know your Apple Account credentials and can approve two-factor authentication. Check photos, messages, authenticator and banking apps after restoration before removing access from the old phone.
Apple's service-preparation instructions also cover Find My and iCloud sync. Follow the instructions for your specific service route. If you are approved to keep the damaged phone until another unit arrives, you do not need to erase it merely because a replacement was requested.
What Happens to Your eSIM and Phone Number?
iPhone Duo is eSIM-only worldwide, so moving a physical SIM card out of it is not an option. A backup can restore apps and other data, but your mobile number must also be activated on the temporary or replacement iPhone. The available method depends on your carrier and whether the damaged Duo can still approve a transfer.
Duo still works: eSIM Quick Transfer
With supported carriers, use Settings > Cellular > Add eSIM on the new iPhone and approve the transfer on the Duo. The number stops working on the old phone once it activates on the new one.
Duo does not work: contact your carrier
Ask for eSIM Carrier Activation, an updated QR code or account-assisted activation of the same number. Have your account verification ready; do not assume a broken phone can approve nearby-device transfer.
Using a spare iPhone: iPhone Handoff
Apple supports same-number switching between two iOS 27 iPhones on participating carriers, including T-Mobile in the U.S. and Telekom in Germany. This requires setup while supported devices are available; it is not a universal recovery method for a completely unusable Duo.
After activation, test an incoming call, outgoing call, ordinary SMS and mobile data. Keep an alternate trusted Apple device or recovery method accessible for banking and two-factor sign-ins. Do not delete the Duo's eSIM as a troubleshooting shortcut; complete the carrier-approved transfer first.
When the Replacement iPhone Duo Arrives
Restore the backup, confirm your mobile line works and check your essential apps before completing the old-phone handover when the service route permits. A replacement running an older iOS release may require a compatible update before it can restore a backup created on newer iOS 27.2 software. Our Duo backup-version guide walks through that specific setup problem.
Once the replacement has been verified, follow Apple's instructions to erase the original device, remove the relevant Find My association if requested, and return it on time. Remove your case and accessories before shipping; Apple warns that extra accessories placed in the return kit will not be sent back.
iPhone Duo Replacement FAQ
Can Apple replace my Duo even when the Apple Store website says sold out?
Possibly. Service stock and retail sale stock can differ. Ask AppleCare to check the replacement order for your exact configuration rather than relying on the online retail listing.
Do I need AppleCare+ if Apple approved a free inner-screen defect replacement?
No, not for the identified defect replacement described in Apple's October 26 statement. But Express Replacement is a separate AppleCare plan benefit; approval of a free replacement alone does not establish eligibility for advance shipping.
What if my broken Duo cannot approve an eSIM transfer?
Ask your carrier to provision your existing number on the temporary or replacement iPhone. Carrier Activation, a replacement eSIM or QR-code activation may be available depending on the network and account.
Should I hand over my Duo before Apple has a replacement?
Confirm the exact service procedure first. If Apple requires you to surrender it for service, plan for the time without a phone; if Apple permits you to keep it temporarily, back it up and avoid further stressing a damaged inner display.
